I've always thought the Jerry Herman song "The Best in the World" from "A Day in Hollywood/ A Night In The Ukraine" would be a terrific audition song. Originated on Broadway by Priscilla Lopez, (earning her a Tony), she plays an usherette in Grauman's Chinese Theatre during the Golden age of Hollywood. In four verses she relates her tale of arriving from Cincinnati with big dreams, quickly being confronted by reality. Undeterred, she vows to stick it out and positions herself as close as possible to those who might recognize her talents. Miraculously she defies the odds and is given her big break. She receives the full Hollywood makeover and is cast in a leading role. At the premiere she finally sees herself as the star her father had always believed in, only to discover, within a week, that the public is fickle and bright flames burn out quickly. This song offers so many vocal changes, creating the opportunity to display the depth and breadth of a performers skills and leave a lasting impression.
