If you can’t tell by my other posts, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE musicals. Perhaps a little too much since instead of revising for my exams I’m still trying to learn the choreography to Anything Goes. Anyway, I like musicals, but there are definitely some that you may not have heard of, whether they got robbed at the Tonys, don’t have a cast album or just didn’t get to Broadway. These are the musicals that you should watch/listen to now, like right now!
#1 The Scottsboro Boys
This show was the final collaboration between John Kander and Fred Ebb so you would think it would be more popular. But due to mixed reviews on Broadway, no cast album on Spotify and the record for most Tony nominations but least wins (12 noms, 0 wins) the show gets looked over even though it is a part fun and part tragic and is based on a true story.
#2 Sweet Smell of Success
Starring John Lithgow, Brian D'Arcy James and Kelli O'Hara, the musical is jazzy and has a really smooth, dark and nightly style to it. Was overshadowed at the Tony Awards by shows like Thoroughly Modern Millie and Urinetown.
#3 Titanic
What did Titanic do? Well it won every Tony it was nominated for, none of which were acting awards. It won best musical and was the first show to win best orchestrations. SO WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT IT?!
#4 Barnum
If the name "Barnum" sounds familiar, it's because it's the same Barnum from The Greatest Showman. Barnum is similar but it is more historicaly accurate and debuted on Broadway in 1980s.
#5 Ain’t Misbehavin’
The Fats Waller is one of, if not, the first successful jukebox musicals. Even though it won the Tony for Best Musical in 1978, it hasn't seen much light after its initial run which is a shame.
