I was once in a show in a youth theatre festival and while I questioned the director/playwright's sanity on a regular basis it turned out awesome he let us play around a lot in one case we kept forgetting when to do scene changes so one of my cast mates came up with a scene change song so we'd remember and it became one of the best parts of the show(people actually applauded our scene changes). But one thing I've found impresses a director is being very dedicated and always at rehearsal. There's a story from one of the high schools around here of a lead coming to the first rehearsal with his whole part memorized (I was attending a performance of this production and overheard someone telling someone else about it at intermission)
