With every new year, there comes an obligation to reluctantly pursue a resolution. January is always an ambitious month, but most resolutions seem to wither away by February. Stop picking a resolution that you view as a punishment, and pick a resolution that will feed your theatre nerd soul!

Here is a list of resolutions tailored to theatre nerds. Pick one, pick all, but we think you’ll find something that interests you (that doesn’t involve a pricey gym membership)!

1. Make an effort to see a live performance every month

These performances might range from middle school performances to Broadway shows. You’d be amazed at how much theatre is happening around you (and at an affordable price)!

2. Read a new script every month

Theatre is great onstage, but reading scripts allows you to direct the plays on the stage in your mind and look at the material in a new way.

3. Find and memorize a new audition piece each month

From different genres and styles to musical theatre, an actor can never have enough audition material. 2017 is the year to becoming an auditioning beast!

4. Write a play

Whether your play lasts 10 minutes or is full-length, just write something! Everyone is a writer, and chances are good you have something interesting to write about. Learn how to format your script properly, and if you feel good about it, enter it into different competitions! At the very least, you’ll learn to appreciate playwrights a little more.

5. Learn about your craft

Pick a book you haven’t read and become an expert! There are thousands of books on design, performance, improvisation, writing, directing, dramaturgy, theatre history, etc. Find one that interests you, or finally read that one book all your friends say you need to read.

6. Study someone’s life each month

Essentially, this means Google-stalk celebrities in theatre and film whom you’re interested in learning more about. We all like to learn about actors and their rise to fame, but there are so many other people who make the magic happen. Find out as much as you can about them. Where did they go to school? What other projects have they worked on? Where are they from? When did they get started in theatre/film? Their stories and lives might interest and inspire you!

7. Explore different jobs in theatre

Theatre muggles think the only jobs available in theatre include acting, building sets and directing. As theatre wizards, we know that’s not the case. There are countless jobs in the world of theatre that many theatre nerds haven’t even heard about. Make it a priority to learn about a new job each month. Ask your friends and other theatre professionals about fun and interesting jobs they’ve seen in theatre.

8. Learn about schools with unique theatre programs

We all know about the big-name theatre schools, but what about the ones we don’t hear about? Just because a school isn’t publicized as much as Juilliard or NYU doesn’t mean it couldn’t be the perfect fit for you. Whether you’re working on an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or hoping to take individual classes, knowing schools could help you make this decision. Check out the best school in your state and then see whether you can find the best theatre school in your surrounding states.

9. Learn about theatre in different countries

America is certainly a theatre and film powerhouse, but we can sometimes forget that every country has its own unique spin on theatre. Check out theatre venues, learn about famous playwrights and actors and see what else you can learn. You could be an American ambassador for culturally diverse theatre.

10. See what classes are available near you (improv, writing, acting, woodworking)

Regardless of where you are in your lifetime theatre journey, it’s never too early or too late to take a class. There are likely community classes or college-level classes near you that you can take. Theatres usually have some kind of education program for students of all ages, so look up your local theatre. You could even sign up for a class at Home Depot and learn how to work with tools and other building materials.

11. Boost your special skills (dialects, stage combat, dance, instruments)

Do you struggle with the “Special Skills” portion of your resume? Maybe you have some special skills, but you want more! Pick a skill you wish you had and learn how to do it by watching tutorials on YouTube. Buy a book that will teach you how. Sign up for classes and learn from a professional. You’d be amazed at how fast you can boost your special skills.

12. Perform for free in an atypical location

Grab some of your theatre friends and put on a show for whoever wants to show up! Perform in a park, parking lot, bar, basement, warehouse or street corner — anywhere works! Write a script and make it a world premiere, or put on an improvised show. You can advertise for free with the wonder that is social media. You might team up with a business or charitable organization and make it an event. The possibilities are endless! You have so much power to create theatre, and you don’t even need to spend a single penny.

13. Build something using tools and designs

Maybe you consider yourself handy. Maybe you’ve never held a hammer. Regardless of your experience with construction, pick a project that requires designs and tools and build something! The task seems daunting when you get started, but you’ll feel so accomplished when you’re looking at your new shelves or birdhouse. We can’t all be on a tech crew all the time, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still develop and hone our technical skills!

14. Watch a film adaptation of a play or musical

With all the theatre-to-film adaptations floating around out there, we have no excuse for not watching them! On your next movie night or Netflix binge, watch some plays or musicals turned into movies. You’ll learn more about the plot, and you’ll be able to join in the conversation when your friends start discussing the play or musical.

15. Get new headshots and boost your resume

When was the last time you updated your headshot and resume? With camera phones these days, everyone is a photographer. Grab a friend and a couple of outfits and hit up the nearest park, city or monument. Check out some free resume templates online and update your recent productions, training and accomplishments. Print or staple your resume to the back of your headshot, and you’re ready for your next audition!

16. Discover a new theatre company each month

Every theatre company has a distinctive purpose and mission statement. Learn about theatre companies near you and why they produce theatre. You’ll be amazed at the diverse productions and companies in your location. You could even go one step further and see a show produced by that theatre company. You’ll have a lot more respect for what it’s doing when you know why it’s doing it.

17. Record everything on social media!

If you decide to follow these resolutions, you’ll be a new kind of theatre nerd. Infect your friends with your nerdiness by sharing your journey online. Even better, let your non-theatre friends see all the cool stuff you’re doing and encourage them to do the same. By expressing your experiences, you can help advocate for theatre and perhaps inspire others to do the same!

This is the first in a series of articles that will help you reach these resolutions. Check back soon for monthly updates and articles on how 2017 will be your year to become the ultimate theatre nerd!

When we think of plays and musicals, most of us immediately think of the big cities doing the big productions. What’s the new hit musical? What popular play will every high school and college want to do next year? Popular plays are great and they definitely attract large crowds, but why is this? People are drawn to the plays they know. This doesn’t leave much room to “broaden horizons” and “consider new perspectives.” We can’t just blame audiences either… (most) theatres are choosing pieces that they know will attract audiences. After all, people are going to buy tickets for Into the Woods or Noises Off before they see an unknown show, so theatres would be silly to pass up this guaranteed revenue.

Here’s my question for you… what if things were different? What if our society and culture decided over night that new plays are more exciting than seeing Wicked for the eleventh time? Regardless of what brings you to theatre, acting, design, directing, producing, or attending as an audience member, I want to convince you how new plays will benefit your theatrical experience.

Actors & Designers

This is one of the few times actors and designers are clumped together, but their experience with new plays tends to be similar. Whenever you find out your next show, you immediately research the show. You check for past productions, see how other actors played your part and see how sets and other technical elements were executed. This is a great practice in knowing what’s successful, but in a way you’re cheating yourself. You are taking away the creative power from yourself and relying on past productions.

Well known performers like Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel set the standard for the lead roles in Wicked. I can bet you’d be disappointed if you got tickets for Hamilton and Lin-Manuel Miranda happened to be sick that night. We crave the originals. With new plays, you are the standard. Actors create the role and designers create the world. There is no greater challenge than a new play, but that just means there is no greater accomplishment.

Directors & Producers

You are the big dogs making the big decisions. Directors are always trying to find new concepts and new ways of presenting old plays and old ideas. What if I told you that you could present these same new concepts, but with new plays and new ideas? You might also be involved with the development of the play. Make a lasting mark on the theatre community by proving that your interpretation of a play is how every theatre will want to portray that same play.

Producers, you are so misunderstood in the theatre world. People think it’s all about money for you, but all the best producers are artists themselves. You are the biggest encouragers in theatre world. You listen to the people and you decide what they want, but are you always deciding what they need? I’m not saying you can’t still do Fiddler on the Roof next season. If you say your town will love it… I believe you. What I am saying is that you should consider adding some new plays to that season. There are thousands of plays and playwrights that would be a perfect addition to your season and they just need someone to believe in them and give them a chance. Without new plays, the future of theatre is doomed to reruns. Invest in the future of theatre and invest in new plays.

Playwrights & Dramaturgs

I didn’t mention you guys earlier because this article is dedicated to you! You are the gateway to our future and we need to have faith in you! Sometimes you’ll get one thousand rejections before that single “yes,” but that one yes makes up for everything else. People want to hear what you have to say and they need to hear what you have to say. Never stop creating and never stop advocating.

Audience

Alright theatre audience, I saved the most important one for last (don’t tell the others). First of all, thank you for making theatre happen. Without the audience, theatre doesn’t exist. Everything we do is for our audience, so you have more power than you think. Here’s what you can do, go see new plays. It sounds simple enough, but audience members find new plays to be a gamble. Which they are! New plays should be a gamble. If we kept doing the stuff we know will work, it’s not really new anymore is it? Then we’re becoming Hollywood. Poor Hollywood, they’re so afraid of change and progress that they’ve limited themselves to sequels, prequels, and remakes. Is there no imagination left in Hollywood? Maybe not, but that’s why new plays are thriving more than ever. People want the challenge and people want the newest ideas. Help keep the theatre alive and thriving. Seek out new plays and tell your theatres to seek out new plays!

Now don’t get me wrong. I love the classics. I myself have seen Les Miserables seven times, Phantom of the Opera four times, and almost every Shakespeare play. The classics should not be forgotten. But… and you knew there was going to be a but… each of these plays and musicals had their own start. Each of these plays and musicals started out small and worked their way up. You never know what gem you might stumble across. You never know which new classic is right in your backyard. Each new play has the potential to enhance careers, provide a new perspective, and most importantly… make a change. Support our future by supporting new plays.

Do you ever wonder what kind of things theatre teachers see in auditions? After all, theatre teachers see thousands of auditions, so you know there are bound to be some unfortunately memorable performances.

1. The same monologue

I have nothing against D.M. Larson or Kellie Powell, but I have all their monologues memorized now. Time to read some more plays, people!

2. The improviser

You just came up with that monologue on the spot? I had no idea…

3. Fierce eye contact

Please don’t look me in the eyes while you perform a monologue about “me” attacking you.

4. Wrong genre

Your monologue was hilarious, but I don’t think Hamlet is supposed to be funny…

5. Vulgar performance

You would think people would censor themselves with teachers in the room… alas… they do not.

6. “Can I start over?”

I’m starting to think this monologue is about short-term memory loss. If it is… brilliant.

7. Overly prepared freshman

This one is only unfortunate because the seniors are going to whine that they were beat out by a freshman.

8. Lazy seniors

The senioritis is strong with this one… so I’m giving your part to a freshman.

9. Techies who can act and sing

You can act and sing too?! Great, now who’s going to build the set?

10. The plagued

You’re so sick that you weren’t at school today, but theatre is life, so… wipe your nose and try not to cough on the directors.

11. The Nervous Fish

At any moment these students think a shark will appear and eat them whole. (I have yet to see this shark).

12. No-show

Thank you for signing up last too… I was hoping to wait around for no one.

13. One character McGee

I really want to cast you… unfortunately the only character you can play doesn’t really fit in this show.

14. Original monologue

Must every original monologue be a dark and depressing window into your inner-thoughts?

15. Multi-tasking

Remember, you’re allowed to act and sing simultaneously!

16. Two left feet

Don’t worry, we’ll put you in the back.

17. Ineligible

Every theatre department is unique in its own way, but there seem to be the same type of people in each group. Here is a list of the 18 personalities that comprise pretty much every theatre department.

1. The Annoying Talent

The Annoying Talent is very talented… there’s no doubt, but you kind of hate them for it. Everything comes naturally to them and it seems like they don’t have to work as hard as everybody else. They can do no wrong.

2. The Tech Guru

The Tech Guru can do anything… seriously. We’re not certain when they had time to learn all the stuff they know. If you turn your back for one second, they have the set built. Let’s be honest, the theater belongs to them.

3. The Hidden Talent

The Hidden Talent is the quiet person at the back of room who never says anything until they perform… and when they perform… everyone’s jaw drops. Where did that come from? Then they’re back to their shy ways.

4. The Athlete

The Athlete thought it would always be fun to try acting. They’re not bad either! By the end of the show they’ll say, “I wish I would have done theatre sooner.” It’s always fun having half the football team in the audience because you cast the wide receiver.

5. The Drama (AKA The Gossip)

The Drama is the reason we call it the “Drama Department.” When they’re not spreading rumors on Twitter and Facebook… you might hear common phrases like “She said,” “He said,” and “Let them say it to my face.”

6. The Optimist

The Optimist always has a smile… it’s slightly alarming, but refreshing at the same time. You’re not sure how they’re able to generate a smile as often as they do, but you love it!

7. The Singer

The Singer knows they can sing… and they let everyone else know it. Yes, we know you know every song in Hamilton. And no, we don’t want to hear it for the eighth time today.

8. The Hugger

The Hugger loves EVERYONE! They will give you hug. You can’t say no… you can’t escape the hug.

9. The Overachiever

The Overachiever does everything in theatre. If ever you can’t find them… check the theatre. You often hear them joking that they should just sleep at the school… because they’re always there. The department wouldn’t function without them!

10. The Boss

The Boss gets work done! These people are usually attracted to student leadership jobs like stage manager, student director, and crew chief. Their favorite thing in life is bossing people around… and they’re good at it.

11. The Mom

The Mom is everyone’s best friend. They always take care of everyone and wipe our tears when we cry.

12. The Absent

The Absent is the person who you know is in the show, but you don’t usually see them until show night. They give a whole new meaning to “Empty chairs at empty tables.” They always seem to have other commitments… allegedly.

13. The Fan

The Fan is everyone’s biggest fan! They attend every show and always tell you how great of a job you did. They aspire to be just like you!

14. The Critic

The Critic cannot be pleased. No one is ever good enough for their taste. They always have an opinion (welcomed or unwelcomed).

15. The Awkward

The Awkward is exactly what you think. Every theatre department has that one awkward kid who is too awkward to be in a show… until you finally see them in a perfect role and then you must see them in every show! There is something mesmerizing about all that awkward!

16. The Misunderstood

The Misunderstood is very misunderstood. They prove how misunderstood they are by wearing elaborate makeup and clothing that you’re pretty certain they stole from the costume closet.

17. The Guitar Player

The Guitar Player has a guitar. The guitar player has hair that dramatically falls into their eyes. The Guitar Player has a small following of underclassmen who have never heard such genuine and honest music.

The Jokester is hilarious. They always make you laugh… even when you probably shouldn’t be laughing. They’re a child at heart and probably will be for the rest of their life.

If you’re like me… you probably laughed at the title of this article and then cried on the inside while considering the harsh realities. When I was an acting major at the University of Northern Colorado I used to joke that the final class in our program should be a bartending class. We can just call it THEA 450. I mean… so many people end up going into the service industry, why not? Let’s be honest, we’re just in these jobs to pay the bills. So here comes the big question…

What day jobs are most ideal for the aspiring performer?

10. Bartending & Serving

I know this article is about alternate options, but there’s a reason why so many actors are drawn to these jobs! Work hours are flexible, multiple people can usually cover your shift, and there are restaurants and bars everywhere! Plus, walking away from each shift with cash tips… not so bad!

9. Catering

Between catering companies and catering departments at venues and event centers, this is a booming industry. You have the chance of meeting new people, attending different events, and traveling to appealing places. With all those people… you just never know who you might meet! Plus, can anyone say free leftovers!

8. Uber & Lyft Drivers

Do you have a car? Then you have a job! Companies like Uber and Lyft have made it so much easier to fatten up your wallet. You work as frequently as you want and whenever you want. People always need rides. The best part is… you are your own boss!

7. Tour Guide

What kind of tour guide? Any kind of tour guide! Every tour is practically a performance! Employers love to hire actors as tour guides. Actors are naturally enthusiastic, personable, and good at remembering things.

6. Retail/Sales

Maybe you’ve never considered sales, but you’re good at it! You know how to listen, react, and appeal to customers. Wow, you didn’t even know you had those skills. Maybe you picked the right major after all. You’ll be top salesperson by the end of the month!

5. Hospitality/Customer Service

The best part of these jobs is probably the character study. You’ll get to meet all the people… and then you’ll make all the characters. If you can tolerate needy people and do it all while smiling… you might actually enjoy a job in hospitality or customer service.

4. Movers & Junk Removers

These jobs aren’t for everyone, but if you like staying active… this might be the perfect option. You stay active and fit while traveling around town. Plus, these jobs often entail some kind of tip at the end of the job. (I was getting the feeling that you like money… so I thought I’d mention that part).

3. Teaching & Tutoring

Is there something you think you could teach? There are always opportunities to teach and tutor. There are websites dedicated to finding teachers and tutors for young kids and even adults. Even if you don’t teach an acting or directing class… you got an A+ in Algebra and little Timmy two blocks down is struggling and his mom is willing to pay good money to make sure he doesn’t have to retake that class for a third time.

2. House Sitting

Not babysitting… house sitting! You are paid to watch someone’s house while they’re on vacation! This job often entails an overnight commitment and usually feeding and walking animals, but that’s it! Every job is a little different, but you still get to operate on your own schedule. Do you have an audition at 2:00? That’s okay… you can walk the dogs at 3:00! Search for house sitting jobs near you and you will seriously consider applying!

1. Working in a Theatre

This one seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised! Actors sometimes forget that there are other jobs in the theatre world than just acting. Working in a theatre keeps you in the industry and keeps you connected to other people. We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” Make sure you know the right people. Any job in a theatre is going to help you get closer and closer to making the right connections and landing your dream role! There’s no doubt about it, you’re a performer first. Performing just doesn’t always pay the bills, so until it does, consider these options while you pursue your dreams.

Are you a parent of a theatre kid? Well, they’re probably showing you this article because they want to be a theatre major and you’re the only thing standing in the way of them pursuing their dreams! Too harsh? No, it’s not! This is the rest of their life we’re talking about, so you can suck it up and invest five minutes to read an article that may result in a lifetime of happiness for your child.

Now… parents, I don’t want you thinking that I’m not acknowledging your concerns, because I know all your arguments and I’m here to say… you’re wrong. Here is
the list of parental concerns and then of course… my rebuttal:

My child won’t make any money in theatre.

Wrong. Theatre is a continuously growing industry with new jobs every day. Take a second and research the amount of theatre-related jobs that exist… here’s a secret… it’ll take you a while. There are more jobs out there than just acting or directing. Guess what! Your child will learn all about those jobs in college… when they’re a theatre major.

I just want what’s best for my child.

Isn’t a happy life what’s best? Tell me Mom and Dad, are you happy with your career? If you said yes, then it’s because you had people supporting you along the way telling you, “You can do it!” If you said no, then don’t you dream about a job that would make you happy? You could always apply to be a theatre major with your kid. Just because you gave up on your life and on your dreams… doesn’t mean Junior has to. Life is too short. Plus, I’ve never heard anyone say, “I’m really passionate about accounting.” You might remember the famous quote by Marc Anthony, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

You can’t do theatre forever. Then what?

First of all… two words, Betty White. Second of all, like any other job, you can stay in this industry as long or as little as you want. Just like any other occupation, making connections and “climbing the ladder” is just as important to the health and longevity of your career. So let’s say your child pursues their dream of theatre and then decides they want to do something else… guess what, they have a degree. Yeah it’s a degree in theatre, but you and I both know that simply having a degree is more important than the type of degree. How many people do you know that have a job completely unrelated to their undergraduate major? Last I checked, you don’t need a degree in Geography to be an Insurance Broker… but I assure you they exist.

A theatre major is more versatile than any other major. Think about the skills you need for theatre, collaboration, problem solving, marketing, design, analysis, presenting and performing, time management, and the list goes on! Are you telling me these are skills that any employer wouldn’t love to see in an applicant? Plus, have you met your child? They’re hilarious and fun to be around. With those skills and that personality… what job can’t they get?

Parents, I just want to help you help yourselves. You love your kids, I know that and they know that (even if they do sometimes tell you otherwise). One way you can show your love is by supporting their decisions. If theatre isn’t for them… they’re going to find out in college. The life of a theatre major is tougher than most and it’s not for everyone. But if you tell your child they can’t do something… if you even hint at it, that’ll make them want to do it even more. If your child is going to succeed in theatre, wouldn’t you rather they do it because of you and not in spite of you?

So what can you do now Mom and Dad?

Ask your child why they want to be a theatre major and see what they say. See how they talk. When was the last time you heard someone talk so passionately about their future? Still skeptical? Go visit a university’s theatre program. Tour the school, ask them tough questions, and meet the people who are doing what your child wants to do. Chances are good… you might start to see that theatre is truly the only option for your kid. Before you say no to a lifetime of happiness, do your homework.

Take it from me, I’m a teacher, an actor, a director, a playwright, and most importantly… I’m happy. All because my parents believed in me and believed in my dream.

Do you or your parents still have concerns? Write them below. I’ll work through them with you!
