Here are 10 of the best contemporary Off-Broadway albums:

1. ‘Tick, Tick…Boom!’

Probably one of the more well-known Off-Broadway recordings, “Tick, Tick…Boom!” is an autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson. It tells the story of Larson as a struggling composer before he wrote “Rent.” He initially performed the score in a solo show in the ‘90s, but after his death, the show played Off-Broadway in 2001 with a three-person cast.

Bonus Track: At the end of the cast recording, there is a song that is not featured in the show that is sung by Larson himself. Try not to get chills.

2. ‘Daddy Long Legs’

Based on the 1912 novel of the same name by Jean Webster, this musical tells the story of an orphan with a mysterious benefactor. The score for this show is sweet and charming, and the plot is great for those who love a good old-fashioned love story (think “Jane Eyre” and Jane Austen). This is a more classical musical done right.

3. ‘Hadestown’

This show ran Off-Broadway in 2016 at the New York Theatre Workshop. With a book and score by Anaïs Mitchell, the story revolves around the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. This bluegrass and soulful score hits all the right notes and beautifully tells this tragic tale. If you are a fan of “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812,” you’ll recognize the names Rachel Chavkin, the director, and Amber Gray, who starred as Persephone. Though this show is currently shelved, many hope it will make its way to Broadway soon.

Bonus Track: Much of this score is upbeat, but this love ballad is one of the most entrancing songs in the show.

4. ‘Bare’

This original musical tells the story of two gay students struggling to cope in Catholic school. Their story parallels the play their school is putting on, “Romeo and Juliet.” This pop opera is gritty, emotional and thought-provoking.

Bonus Track: Give this a listen if you wanted a snippet of “Romeo and Juliet” in song.

5. ‘Dogfight’

Based off the movie by the same name, this musical played Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theater in 2012. The music for this show is composed by a little duo called Pasek and Paul (“Dear Evan Hansen,” “La La Land,” “The Greatest Showman”). This contemporary musical follows a group of friends serving in Vietnam. Also featured is Derek Klena before he was in “Anastasia.” With a killer cast and amazing music, this is a great musical that fell through the cracks after its short stint Off-Broadway.

6. ‘Be More Chill’

Based on the book of the same name by Ned Vizzini, this contemporary musical ran in 2015 at the Two River Theater in Riverbank, New Jersey. Though not officially Off-Broadway, this musical did receive a cast album and gained a bit of a cult following since its run. This is not your average musical, with a story about teenagers trying to fit in and a crazy robotic pill that has the ability to make you cool.

Bonus Track: Performed by George Salazar, “Michael in the Bathroom” is one of the best tracks from the show, embodying all the anxieties of wanting to fit in.

7. ‘A New Brain’

This autobiographical musical first premiered Off-Broadway in 1998 and was revived at the New York City Center with Jonathan Groff in 2015. With its book, lyrics and music by William Finn, this musical tells the story of Finn as a struggling songwriter when he is suddenly told he may die if he doesn’t have brain surgery. The story is both gripping and funny, while the music is just beautiful. This one is definitely worth a listen if you love “Falsettos” or “Tick, Tick…Boom!”

8. ‘Fortress of Solitude’

This musical had a short stint at the Public Theater back in 2014. Based on the novel by Jonathan Lethem, this musical is a coming-of-age story about two boys growing up in Brooklyn. Chronicling the boys’ lives from the ‘70s to the ‘90s, Michael Friedman’s score includes R&B, hip-hop and contemporary tunes. This musical will make you smile, dance and cry, so listen at your own risk.

Bonus Track: All songs from this show are amazing, but the finale is probably one of the most well-known from this musical.

9. ‘Heathers’

Of course this list would be incomplete without this angsty teenage musical. Opening Off-Broadway in 2014, this beloved ‘80s movie-turned-musical gained a huge following. From the shoulder pads to the catchy score by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy (“Legally Blonde”), this musical is definitely to die for. With “Mean Girls” opening on Broadway soon, maybe there is hope for the original mean girls to follow.

10. ‘The Last Five Years’

Shockingly, this fan favorite has never had a Broadway run. With music by Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown (“Parade,” “The Bridges of Madison County”), this musical tells the story of an ill-fated couple. The story is told out of sequence, so you see all the stages of this couple’s relationship over the five years they were together.

Bonus Track: Though this is about an ill-fated couple, this is a very uplifting finale and one of the best songs in the show.

Bonus Album: ‘21 Chump Street’

Even if you like listening to Off-Broadway musicals and are a huge Lin-Manuel Miranda fan, this musical may have been off your radar. This 15-minute musical, based on an episode from the podcast “This American Life,” was showcased at the Brooklyn Academy of Music back in 2014. The story revolves around an undercover police officer and a high school student who sold her drugs. Anthony Ramos starred as the lead next to Lindsay Mendez, and though this musical is short, the story and music really pack a punch. It’s definitely worth a listen for true crime lovers and Miranda fans.

Millennials have flooded the Palace Theatre to relive their childhood and have not been disappointed. The moment you walk in, you see that it has been transformed into a psychedelic, underwater paradise for both theatre nerds and children alike. Seriously, they have kelp made of pool noodles hanging from the rafters.

The musical follows fan favorites SpongeBob, Sandy and Patrick on a quest to stop a volcano from erupting and destroying Bikini Bottom. The original plotline is fairly basic and somewhat predictable. Generally, there are very low stakes throughout the show, but given the content, it’s still a great ride to go along with some lovable characters.

One of the most impressive feats of this musical is the score. It includes a song written by nearly every artist you can think of, from David Bowie to Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, John Legend and Sara Bareilles, just to name a few. Though this sounds like a crazy, eclectic group of songwriters for one musical, it kind of works. This does mean that one minute you’re listening to an inspirational pop ballad then watching Plankton rap to T.I. the next, but most of these songs are crazy catchy and fun. Good luck listening to the album and not getting Lady Antebellum’s “Chop to the Top” stuck in your head for hours. There are some songs that could have benefited from a bit more fine-tuning, but overall, the score is fairly cohesive.

The true star of this musical is newcomer Ethan Slater, who portrays the porous protagonist. From the classic SpongeBob giggle to the constant swishing across the stage, Slater truly embodies everyone’s favorite sponge and captures his optimistic giddiness in every scene. Other standout performances include Gavin Lee’s tap-dancing Squidward and Lilli Cooper’s kickass Sandy. And, one breakout performance is Jai’Len Christine Li Josey’s Pearl. Though Pearl is a fairly minor character in the series, Josey’s vocals stop the show in “Daddy Knows Best.”

Other appearances include fan favorites Mr. Krabs, complete with crab claws, Gary the snail rolling across the stage and, of course, the villainous Plankton. This cast delivers killer portrayals of characters everyone knows and loves. It’s clear the creators really tried to pay homage to the television series — and the audience loves it.

“SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” is a show you walk into not knowing quite what to expect, but you will leave with a smile after sitting through an entertaining adventure. Is it groundbreaking musical theatre? No. But if you need a break from the real world, Broadway’s Bikini Bottom is definitely a great place to visit.

Here are just a few things thespians were thankful for in 2017:

1. ‘The Lion King’ Is Still on Broadway After 20 Years

It was 20 years ago this year that “The Lion King” graced the stage. Since then, it has become one of the top-grossing shows on Broadway. Based on the beloved Disney film and featuring a score by Elton John and masterful costumes, this show took Broadway by storm. “The Lion King” has cemented a permanent place for Disney on Broadway, and there is no sign of the sun setting on Pride Rock anytime soon.

2. Broadway Royalty Returning to the Stage

One major thing we were thankful for this year was seeing the return of Broadway royalty. From Bette Midler and Patti LuPone to Billy Porter returning to his Tony Award-winning role as Lola in “Kinky Boots,” this year saw the return of some major star power. It’s years like these we rejoice for the kings and queens of Broadway.

3. When This Happened

Speaking of Broadway royalty, Midler deserves her own spot on this list. Not only did this woman finally get the Tony she has always deserved, but she gave us an unforgettable speech to go with it. We are truly thankful for the unfiltered Divine Ms. M.

4. ‘Moulin Rouge’ Is Coming to Broadway

It’s seemed inevitable that this movie-musical would eventually make its way to Broadway, and it finally got the green light and its own production team this year. Even among all the non-musical films hitting the stage this year, we don’t even have to question Baz Luhrmann’s smash hit’s theatrical debut!

5. The Music of Michael Friedman

One of the more surprising losses in the theatre world this year was the death of songwriter Michael Friedman. Known for his works “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” and “The Fortress of Solitude,” this songwriter showed a ton of promise with his Off-Broadway work. He had multiple shows in the works at the time of his death, so we hope we have not heard the last of his work.

6. We Had ‘Great Comet’

One of the sadder things to happen on Broadway this year was the closing of “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.” After hearing the concept of this show, some people thought it could never work on Broadway. Not only did it work, but it gained a huge fan following, won multiple Tony Awards and gave us Dave Malloy. From the score to the immersive experience to the amazing cast, this show will truly be missed.

7. A Long-Running Play

It was a great year for playwrights on Broadway, as many plays garnered a ton of buzz. With shows such as “Oslo” drawing in crowds and Laurie Metcalf taking home a Tony for “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” it was a very diverse year for plays on Broadway.

A play that came a bit out of left field was “The Play That Goes Wrong.” This show not only outlasted all the heavily Tony-nominated plays of the season, but it’s become the longest-running play on Broadway. This hysterical show pays homage to anyone who has ever worked on a show and is laugh-out-loud funny. Here’s hoping it stays the longest-running play on Broadway!

8. The Return of Movie Musicals

Off the success of films such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “La La Land,” it’s no surprise there has been an increase in interest of movie musicals. Not only are we getting live-action Disney musical films and stage-to-screen musicals, but we’re once again getting original movie musicals. One of the most anticipated films of the year is “The Greatest Showman,” which features Broadway stars Hugh Jackman and Keala Settle. Pasek and Paul wrote the score, so there’s no way this movie can disappoint.

9. From Stage to Computer Screen

Remember last year when it was a huge deal “She Loves Me” live-streamed online? This year, we got to see so many more shows from the cheapest seat possible: our couch. For some time now, there has been a debate of whether streaming shows ruins the theatrical experience. However, what these captures have done is make high-quality Broadway shows accessible to people all over the world. With a bunch of shows filmed just this past year, including “Falsettos” and “Present Laughter,” let’s hope this surge in streaming shows continues.

10. Ben Platt

It’s hard to pinpoint just one reason to be thankful for this amazing actor. This was truly his year, since he made “Dear Evan Hansen” one of the top-selling shows on Broadway, won his first Tony Award, guest-starred on “Will and Grace” and has an original album in the works. It’s tough that he’s leaving Broadway this month, but we’ll definitely be watching to see what this talented guy does next.

After walking away with only one Tony Award for Best Direction over the summer, this show has gained momentum since it opened in March. Though you might think a show about America’s worst terrorist attack in history would be depressing and not something you’d want to sit in a theatre for two hours to watch, it’s anything but. Oddly enough, you walk out of the theatre feeling better about humanity and the world we live in. It’s this, plus the great music and work of the cast and the crew, that has put this show on the map.

Here’s what you can expect from “Come From Away:”

Welcome to the Rock

Set in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, “Come From Away” tells the story of the events that took place shortly after 9/11. If you have never heard of this tiny town — which more than doubled in size on the day of the terrorist attacks — this musical gives great insight into this generous place. A musical that could just be utterly depressing is uplifted through the representation of this town and how its citizens helped people from all over the world.

Along with gaining some insight about Newfoundland from the show, there is almost as much representation of this Canadian island in the audience as there is onstage. Many Newfoundlanders travel all the way to New York City to see this show and see their home represented onstage. Along with these Newfoundlanders showing up with flags and cheering in the audience, there are a few natives onstage as well. The cast’s Petrina Bromley (Bonnie and others) is a native Newfoundlander, which makes her representation extra special.

The Strongest Ensemble on Broadway

It’s shows like these that kind of make you wish “Best Ensemble” was a category at the Tony Awards. What is brilliant about this musical is that there is no one lead character. “Come From Away” tells the story of communities. Every person onstage is at least one character as a Newfoundlander and a New Yorker or someone from somewhere else around the world. This means every actor has to get into the mentality of being someone affected by 9/11 or taking care of someone affected by it. This is an amazing choice. Overall, the cast members’ energy and vibrancy they bring to every part they play is phenomenal.

The Storytelling

Not to take any credit away from the actors, but there is another reason why the characters are so amazing. The Tony-nominated book writers for the show, Irene Sankoff and David Hein, interviewed people for years to write this book. They listened to their stories about their experiences from 9/11 and getting stranded in Gander, and then put all these real stories into the show. This is perhaps why no one cast member plays just one character: There are just too many stories to tell.

Perhaps the most notable person featured as a character in the show is Beverley Bass. Phenomenally portrayed by Jenn Colella, who scored a Tony nomination for the role, this woman was the first female pilot for American Airlines. Her story is best portrayed through the song, “Me and the Sky.” This show shed light on people we never knew before, such as Bass, who are true unsung heroes.

The Music

Back to that song sung by Colella in the show, the music throughout is surprisingly uplifting, upbeat and just overall amazing. The beat alone from the opening number, “Welcome to the Rock,” pulls you in for the rest of the show. Again, you might think this show would only be filled with somber melodies and ballads, but this musical has every song you could want in a musical. From the upbeat opening number and “Me and the Sky” to the lively “Screech In,” the show has everything. There are songs that will make you laugh and songs that will make you cry.

How This Musical Is Relevant

This musical has one thing very few musicals can achieve: relevance. In this way, “Come From Away” has become something many people didn’t even know they needed. It reminds us that when times get tough, humanity prevails. As seen in the show, we can overcome anything because at the end of the day, humanity is mostly good. This musical takes a terrible event and shows the audience a beautiful story about how a tiny island opened its doors to thousands of strangers. Would this musical have been so relevant just a couple of years ago? It’s hard to say, but it’s most definitely relevant now and definitely worth seeing.

So, just in case you’re still asking yourself whether it’s worth it to see this musical, the answer is yes. Go to the rock. It will feel like home.

Now is definitely the time to check out some Off-Broadway shows. Here are seven productions that are getting a ton of hype in this coming season:

1. ‘Spamilton’

Though not new to Off-Broadway, this show will be playing into 2018 after another extension. Seeing as “Hamilton” tickets are still one of the hardest ones to snag on Broadway, the next best thing (and the cheaper option) is “Spamilton.”

By “Forbidden Broadway” creator Gerard Alessandrini, this parody checks all the boxes for true “Hamilton” fans and Broadway fanatics. The show is highly endorsed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and combines our favorite characters from the hit musical with its creator all on one stage. How much more of a reason do you need to see this thing?

2. ‘Drunk Shakespeare’

For all of those Shakespeare and improv lovers out there, “Drunk Shakespeare” is definitely not one to miss. In this production, a hilarious troupe of actors perform a condensed Shakespeare classic such as “Macbeth” and “Hamlet” as one of them throws back shots throughout the show.

Set in a cool library with drinks available to the audience (yes, this is sadly 21+), the actors improvise scenes, interact with the audience and keep the drunk actor drinking. With its experimental approach to Shakespeare’s work, this show is definitely a fun night out.

3. ‘A Clockwork Orange’

This critically acclaimed production first premiered in London and stars Jonno Davies as Alex. The production is truer to the book than the film and focuses on Anthony Burgess’s dystopian world. “A Clockwork Orange” caused a bit of outrage and protest in the ‘70s when the work was brought to the screen, and the play feels oddly relevant in 2017. With other works such as “1984” on Broadway at the moment, the idea of an alternate society has become a bit of a theme.

This great production is only playing at New World Stages for a limited run, so be sure to check it out before it leaves in January.

4. ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’

Though 2005 was the last time this classic was on Broadway, it’s not too safe to call this year’s Off-Broadway revival the show’s return to the stage. Set in what’s meant to look and feel like an actual pie shop, this production is drawing huge crowds. The audience gets to sit at tables and watch the show surrounded by performers as they eat actual pie.

Aside from being a well-done production of a classic, the experimental aspects of the revival bring the show alive. It’s currently planned to run through Dec. 31. The show won multiple awards, including a Drama League Award and Lucille Lortel Award.

5. ‘Tiny Beautiful Things’

After a sold-out run last season at the Public Theater’s larger Newman Theater, this show will return for a short run this fall. Starring Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) in the role of Sugar, “Tiny Beautiful Things” tells the story of an advice columnist who gives people brutally honest advice about love and life.

Based on the book of the same name by Cheryl Strayed, the play combines elements of the written work and the author’s life. Between Thomas Kail directing this uplifting and moving play and Vardalos’ performance, it’s no surprise the show is coming back for a second run.

6. ‘Torch Song’

Written by theatre legend Harvey Fierstein, this three-act play tells the story of Arnold Beckoff, a gay drag queen singer living in New York City. This award-winning production first premiered on Broadway in 1982, opening to rave reviews. The show took home Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play for Fierstein’s performance.

Though this show was made into a film in 1998, the buzz it’s getting for the revival is real Starring Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl, “Torch Song” opens at the Tony Kiser Theater in September and will only run until November.

7. ‘Puffs’

This fun new play is getting a ton of hype. The show focuses on the least-talked about Hogwarts house in J.K. Rowling’s franchise, and people can’t get enough of the Puffs. The production has already extended and is now playing at New World Stages.

What “Puffs” has done is give a brand-new perspective to this beloved series. It tells the story of the Hufflepuffs who view Harry Potter as an annoying Gryffindor brat, giving us more insight into the characters we already know by name and introducing some new faces. If you’re not too crazy familiar with this world of wizardry, no worries. As long as you have a basic understanding of Harry, the houses and Death Eaters, you should be fine.

Though it feels like a newer trend, musical shows have been a thing for some time. Some of the more famous ones occurred in shows such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “That ‘70s Show.” Though they make for a great one-off episode, they don’t always go as planned. “Grey’s Anatomy” has one of the least popular musical episodes, which is unsurprising considering the general topics the show covers. It was also insanely creepy to watch the cast sing The Fray’s “How to Save a Life” while operating.

Though these experimental episodes are usually very make-or-break, there are definitely some shows out there that could have an amazing musical episode, such as the following 10 shows:

1. ‘The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’

Yes, this show isn’t too much of a leap, since Titus has at least one amazing musical number every season. But imagine an entire episode of singing! Though Season 3 saw an episode filled with Titus covering Beyonce, Kimmy also deserves some musical screen time, and Lillian and Jacqueline would crush a quirky duet. Though it’s not yet confirmed, if Daveed Diggs reprises his current role in Season 4, this definitely has to happen.

2. ‘Doctor Who’

This definitely could have been more fun in David Tennant’s era with Billie Piper and John Barrowman on board, but who’s to say there’s no chance for a “Doctor Who” musical episode? Though Peter Capaldi has proven his guitar skills as the Doctor, he is on his way out. SO maybe the next doctor can sing and dance around the Tardis. Stranger things have definitely happened on this show.

3. ‘Jane the Virgin’

This show seems like an obvious choice for a great musical episode. With Xiomara and Rogelio already showing off their singing skills, along with Jane’s “Sweet Lady Jane” alter ego, nothing could go wrong! This could only happen with a full-on dream sequence or a new approach to a novel for Jane. All the musical telenovela drama that would ensue would be amazing.

4. ‘American Horror Story’

This one may be tricky, but still doable. With “Glee” showrunner Ryan Murphy at the helm of this horror anthology, something tells us this could definitely be worked out. Enough singers have graced this show, such as Darren Criss or Lady Gaga. They could definitely work out a delusional dream sequence episode to make this work. Just look how well the scene above worked in Season 2. Of course, this all relies on the theme for the season, but let’s just hope it’s not in the next election-themed season.

5. ‘The Mindy Project’

No, Mindy Kaling has not particularly shown off her musical skills on this show, though there were a ton of “Hamilton” references last season. This show is known for its quirky lead and great ensemble cast. What this show also does best is have great one-off experimental episodes. Last season saw Mindy wake up and live as a white man for a day, and another episode had her reliving the same day over and over again. With the next season being its last, why not have a musical episode? We can only imagine Morgan’s solo number.

6. ‘Modern Family’

Does this show need a musical episode? No. Would it be one of the greatest things to happen on television ever? Yes. Sarah Hyland has recently shown she can really sing, and then there’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, of course. Everyone could join in on the action and make it one hilarious episode. And, even if Sofia Vergara can’t sing, that can only make it funnier.

7. ‘Black Mirror’

This sci-fi show has gained a lot of momentum since it transferred to Netflix and would be a great platform for a musical episode. Set in the near (or distant?) future, many of the episodes are bizarre and put the characters in extreme realities. Borrowing from its Season 3 episode, this show could totally pull off a sing-to-survive dilemma.

8. ‘Will and Grace’

Of course, there are plenty of shows that could make this list that are no longer running. Fortunately, this hit comedy will return this fall! There has already been some speculation about a musical episode, which is no surprise given the core cast. Just take a look at this trailer for the upcoming revival to see what a musical episode could look like.
