I’ve made a series a lists for people to show what winners of the Tony Award for Best Musical they like and don’t like to get an average form what people’s favourite is. However, I see comments on Facebook saying I shouldn’t restrict it to just Best Musical winners. BUT SINCE I’VE ALREADY WRITTEN OUT THE RULES FOR HOW THEY WORK this is for the people who want their musicals that didn’t win Best Musical. I’ve already put some of the people’s favourite down below but what do you think was robbed?
#1 Wicked
No one mourns the wicked but a lot of people mourn the loss of Wicked Best Musical win. Losing to the hilarious Avenue Q, Wicked is still one of the most successful musicals of all time and one of the longest running Broadway shows.
#2 Newsies
If there is one thing I have learned from the internet, it is that incredibly talented male dancers recreating famous events while singing and dancing is better than a heart warming, realistic, unforced love story between two people who are drawn together by their love for music. But who am I to judge?
#3 Matilda the Musical
Health and Safety warning: if you ever say Kinky Boots deserved Best Musical, it is highly likely that you will be ganged up on by a Broadway fans and end up with large injuries and possibly death. You have been warned.
#4 Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
Great Comet had big names, a revolutionary stage and a story (most) people know. It lost to a show with a heartfelt story, emotional songs and (the internet's favourite) Ben Platt. Hard Choice eh?
#5 Parade
The first time one of the most popular composers won a Tony Award for a emotional and very serious musical, it was nominated for many Tonys and was very likely to win. Instead it loses to a revue displaying the life of the most successful choreographer in history. Not too bad in my opinion but makes you think.
#6 Ragtime
A well written, emotional, important, well acted piece of art winning best book and score cannot defeat the power of a live version of the undeniably classic Disney film. For people mad that Ragtime didn't win, I have two words for you: Hakuna Matata!
#7 Falsettos
"This show is so good. Like SO good. Like SO GOOD it could totally isn't going to lose Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical at all. Wait it didn't win?! I'M SO MAD RIGHT NOW DHDJDHSJUSKIOCULLVGAEKCBDALGCACLUGAKY!" - the internet (and me).
#8 Miss Saigon
All of my theatre friends like this show. Or at least 80% of my theatre friends because their love for this show is louder than the friends who don't like it or are just indifferent to it.
#9 Once on this Island
Nominated alongside Miss Saigon at the Tony Awards, we all pray that the new revival will win Best Revival of a Musical beating anything else!
#10 The Secret Garden
I'm starting to think that The Will Rogers Follies shouldn't have won Best Musical because this show was ALSO nominated alongside Miss Saigon and Once on this Island.
#11 Into the Woods
An undeniable classic and arguably the most popular Sondheim musical by far, it was very tight competition against what would become the longest running Broadway show ever.
#12 West Side Story
The beginning of the Stephen Sondheim's composing career, this show is one of the most famous of all time but did lose to the classic, Meredith Wilson's The Music Man.
#13 Follies
Follies was the first ever show to sweep the tech awards (best scenic/costume/lightning design) and has a score by Stephen Sondheim.
#14 Chicago
Chicago has one of the greatest redemption arcs in Broadway history. Originally losing to A Chorus Line and then being revived to become the 2nd longest show in Broadway history.
#15 Come From Away
#16 Finding Neverland
For some fans of Finding Neverland, "The World [was] Turned Upside Down" when this musical was not nominated for a single Tony Award (and somehow was approved to perform "Stronger" during the Tony Awards despite this). However, this beautiful story with incredible music to match gained more favor with audiences than with the Tony Award Committee, winning Broadway.com's Audience Choice Award for Best Musical, so don't worry, Finding Neverland. The officials might have thought this musical was just a "Circus of Your Mind," but your fans and audiences "Believe" in you.
#17 Dreamgirls
While it did end up winning Best book, and several acting awards, it still wound up losing Best Musical to the not often recalled musical based on Fellini's 8 1/2
#18 Waitress
I know that Hamilton totally deserved a Tony because it was pretty amazing, Waitress still deserved something. It not only is hilarious, starred the one and only Jessie Mueller, and had a score by pop icon Sara Barielles, it also told the incredibly empowering story of Jenna (which any woman of any age can relate to tbh).
#19 Something Rotten!
Incredibly hilarious and has stars including Brian D'Arcy James and Christian Borle, this show lost to the heartwarming and important Fun Home!
#20 Mean Girls
With a total of 12 nominations and absolutely 0 wins, Mean Girls was fortunately/unfortunately swept under the bus by The Band's Visit!
