Costume designers far and wide have worked to create some of the stage’s most iconic looks and redesigned them for anticipated revivals.

Here are some of our picks for Broadway’s best dresses:

1. Gigi from ‘Gigi’

Vanessa Hudgens was the picture of elegance in Broadway’s recent revival of “Gigi.” It’s hard to choose between the gorgeous classically cut black and white gowns that Gigi dons as she grows up.

2. Lise from ‘An American in Paris’

The simple and sweet polka-dot dress shows its own sass with a swinging skirt and an eye-catching shade of blue. Gorgeous!

3. Natasha from ‘Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812’

Natasha’s empire-waisted white gown is delicate with its lace sleeves, yet glamorous with its embellishments.

4. Anastasia from ‘Anastasia’

It’s hard to choose between all of the dreamy dresses costume designer Linda Cho made for Broadway’s “Anastasia.” Between the stunning navy dress inspired by the animated film to the original bold, red gown created for the show, it’s a royal fantasy come to life.

Christine’s white dress is fit for a diva with its many gorgeous layers and romantic ruffles. It’s definitely a gown worthy of a high note.

6. Lola from ‘Kinky Boots’

Short and sequined, this dress created by “Kinky Boots” costume designer Gregg Barnes is runway-ready and the definition of fierce. Look out, Beyoncé!

7. Glinda from ‘Wicked’

Glinda’s gorgeous cake-topper blue ball gown is likely her most infamous look in the musical, but it’s her svelte school arrival outfit that has us swooning. The tailored, clean lines work well with the delicate ruffles at the bottom of the skirt. Plus, what’s not to love about that adorable hat?

8. Diana Ross ‘Motown the Musical’

Diana Ross is a musical and style icon in “Motown the Musical” thanks to costume designer Emilio Sosa. It’s hard not to be blinded by all of the bling on this fiery gown and ruffled overcoat, giving the appearance of a majestic phoenix gliding across the stage.

Lavender never looked so beautiful in a gown fit for a queen. That ball gown deserves a spin around the room and perhaps its own parade.

10. Roxie from ‘Chicago’

From its choreography to its costumes, there is no musical sexier than “Chicago.” Roxie’s iconic short dress manages to be both sexy and sleek with its long lace sleeves.

11. Dolly from ‘Hello, Dolly!’

It’s no question that this dress is a stunner, but it’s the fantastic headpiece that makes the ensemble. If making an entrance is the goal, this headpiece ticks all the boxes.

12. Ursula from ‘The Little Mermaid’

The creativity and intricacies of this dress make it a piece of art. Octopus legs cascading from either side accompany the figure-hugging dress designed with the appearance of scales. Being bad never looked so good.

There are many outstanding frocks created for Broadway stages every year that the Tony Awards really should give them their own category.

When you are a wardrobe dresser, you get pretty good at cleaning costumes and figuring out how to keep them looking as good as new. Here are some of my insider secrets from my years spent backstage on Broadway:

Spitting Removes Blood

via GIPHY

This may sound gross, but if you catch someone getting cut and then bleeding on a costume, have them spit on it and then rub gently. It will come right out. Please note that this is a remedy for small stains or drops of blood.

For larger bloodstains (or if this completely grosses you out), just use a little hydrogen peroxide or soak the garment immediately in hot water before washing it right away with detergent.

A Razor Is a Handy Pill Remover

via GIPHY

If a garment is starting to pill, get a cheap razor and rub it gently over the fabric to take the bumps right off.

Vodka Cures Odors

I’ll Go Get The Vodka Vodka GIF from Vodka GIFs

Vodka is the natural smelly fixer-upper. Put some in a spray bottle, and spray on anything that needs to be refreshed (armpits are a great place to start). Let the clothing dry before you let someone wear it again — you don’t want anyone to smell like a liquor cabinet.

You Can Use Baby Wipes to Remove Stains On the Go

When it only takes two wipes.

Remove stains by gently rubbing non-perfumed baby wipes on the garment.

Hairspray Takes Away a ‘Kiss’

via GIPHY

Well, not literally. But if an actor gets any lipstick on a white starched collar, just spray hairspray on it until it’s moist, let it seep into the fabric and then rub gently with a wet cloth. Rubbing alcohol works, too.

Also, hairspray is great for stopping runs in stockings and tights, as well as avoiding static cling.

Dryer Sheets Do Away With Deodorant Stains

Have a nasty white deodorant mark on your shirt? Take a dryer sheet to it. Rub gently, and it will come right off. A baby wipe will also work.

Sharpie Your Shoes

via GIPHY

Got marked-up shoes you can’t use shoe polish on? Clear up any scuff marks and stains by just using a Sharpie marker (or fabric/shoe paints). Sharpies come in an array of colors and can help make shoes look as good as new.

Use these tips to keep your costumes in tip-top shape, no matter what emergency befalls them.

In “Sunday in the Park With George,” George Seurat sings, “Finishing the Hat” about the creation of beauty. And while his hat may have been his famous painting coming to life in the show, it also applies to the costuming world. Not only do hats or headpieces create the finished look of a costume, but they can also become an iconic symbol of beauty associated with a show for years to come.

Here are eight of our favorites:

1. The Hair Rollers in ‘Grease’

There is no “Grease” without “Beauty School Dropout” and those memorable hats made of rollers piled high on top of each Pink Lady’s head. They have become so iconic that the headpiece is repeated in practically every “Grease” production.

“The Lion King” is memorable for so many reasons, but the headpieces certainly reign supreme. The brainchild of Julie Taymor, they magically come alive through mechanics, the performers and the audience’s own vivid imagination.

“Fiddler on the Roof” is a show deeply devoted to tradition, and the Jewish faith is honored with the headscarves worn by the women in the show.

The glittering tiara worn by Cinderella leaves an awe-inspiring impression as she turns into a princess to attend the Royal Ball. Here is our favorite magic transformation from the show:

The newsboy cap is an iconic look to the early 20th century, and every Newsie in “Newsies” wears one. In this great clip of the “Newsies” Tony Award performance, check out their hats and the fabulous choreography by Christopher Gattelli.

While the Wicked Witch May be in “The Wizard Of Oz”, the witches hat and costume live iconically on as worn by Elphaba, one of the two Leading Ladies, in “Wicked”.

Costumes help make a character, but in some shows, the costume itself has become so iconic that no future production can be repeated without the specific look. These costumes immediately define the musical they reference, even when they’re out of the context of the show.

The following are our top eight musical theatre costumes that have become absolutely classic over the years:

1. Dolly Levi’s Harmonia Gardens Dress in ‘Hello Dolly!’

With the costume by Freddy Wittop, Dolly Levi (originally played by Carol Channing) descends the staircase into Harmonica Gardens in a red sequin gown, turning heads and winning the hearts of everyone she comes into contact with.

2. Barbra Streisand’s Fanny Brice Sailor Suit in ‘Funny Girl’

This sailor suit, designed by Irene Sharaff and worn by Barbra Streisand in both the musical and movie versions of “Funny Girl,” has been repeated time and again in many productions of this beloved musical. It has also become a standard piece for Streisand’s appearances and an iconic representation of both the star and the show on TV and film. Just look at Lea Michele’s ensemble when she won the part of playing Fanny Brice in “Glee.”

Cassie’s red dress, originally designed by Theoni V. Aldredge and worn by Donna McKechnie in the original Broadway production of “A Chorus Line,” speaks volumes about her character’s fiery spirit and her need to stand out and be noticed. This dress has been recreated over and over in all productions since.

Watch this dress move and Cassie (Charlotte d’Amboise) sing and dance her heart out in “The Music and the Mirror” from the Broadway revival of the show.

Originally appearing as a comic strip in the late 19th century, “Annie” became a musical when Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan collaborated on it in 1976. Aldredge took the inspiration from the comic in creating Annie’s finale red dress, catapulting the look to girls everywhere.

5. Dorothy Gale’s Blue-and-White-Checkered Dress in ‘The Wizard of Oz’

This dress became iconic when Dorothy is whisked away to Oz and it magically goes from black and white to living color. Like “Annie” and “A Chorus Line,” a production of this show can’t be done without recreating this look. The original designer, Adrian Adolph Greenberg took his design inspiration from the book series itself. Check out the original covers of the series to see the resemblance.

Speaking of “The Wizard of Oz,” the Wicked Witch of the West lives on eight shows a week in “Wicked” on Broadway, as well as in other productions around the world. Her green skin is just as iconic as the black witch’s outfit — and, not to mention, an ordeal to put on for any actress who plays this character.

Check out this video, which gives you an inside look at actress Rachel Tucker becoming Elphaba.

Anna’s gown, originally designed by Sharaff for the movie version of “The King and I” has become iconic — not for its color, but for the fullness of the skirt. The skirt itself literally takes on a life of its own as Anna is being waltzed around the stage during “Shall We Dance?”

Here is a great video of Anna (Kelli O’Hara) being quick-changed into the dress at the Tony Awards by some fabulous dressers.

Belle’s yellow gown became infamous in the animated version of this beloved musical. Of course, whenever you attend a production, you’ll certainly find yourself surrounded by many little girls dressed up like this princess in a replica of this gown.

Not sure what to don to dance the night away? Let the stage inspire you and try out one of these looks styled after some of Broadway’s best:

No matter which look you choose, give it your own flair and let your personality show. In the words of Annie, remember, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.” So, don’t forget to flash them that killer, red carpet-worthy smile. It’s the best accessory there is.

Many elements go into helping you create a believable character, and one is your costume. Here are some tips for actors to ensure you keep your costumes showing your performance work in its best light:

1. Hang Them Up

Not every theatre will have a dresser to help you hang up your clothes after they are worn, and even if they do, your dresser isn’t your servant. Make sure to always hang up your costumes after you wear them so they don’t wrinkle or end up on the floor where someone can step on them.

2. Don’t Eat While in Costume

Don’t you hate it when you are eating and you spill food on your newest outfit? That usually teaches you not to eat in your finest duds. The same goes for costumes. Do you really want to go onstage with that big ketchup stain from the burger you ordered at half hour because you were hungry? Probably not.

3. Consolidate Your Garments

Make sure to always consolidate your dirty laundry at the end of the performance in the provided laundry basket or given area. You certainly don’t want them forgotten about because you didn’t place them in the proper spot and then have nothing to wear for the next performance.

4. Wear Deodorant

Do both yourself and your costars a favor and make sure to wear deodorant before you put on your costumes. You are sure to sweat onstage. You don’t need your costar coming up to you during the most intimate moment of the show and getting a whiff of body odor you could have easily prevented with a quick roll of antiperspirant. Nor do you want pit stains to distract from your fabulous dance moves.

5. Keep Them Together

Usually the costume designer, costume shop or your dresser will organize your costumes so that specific pieces stay together. This way, they are always easy to find during the quick change or when they are needed for the next scene. Be conscientious when you hang up your clothes and don’t just spread them wherever you see an empty or convenient hanger. Hang them back up where they originally came from.

6. Don’t Use Pens or Markers

If you are staying busy between scenes doing homework or working on creative projects to help the time pass, make sure you aren’t using tools that could endanger your costume. You could accidentally drop that marker, pen or other writing utensil, and your costume could end up being your casualty. Use a pencil or something that can easily be washed out while in costume.

7. Tell Someone When Something Is Broken

Those who work in the costume shop and your dressers are not mind readers. If you are onstage and you rip your costume or something such as a snap or button breaks, make sure you tell someone who can fix it. No one will be mad at you if you report something gone wrong. It happens all the time and is expected by those who work in the costume department. They’ll be very grateful you caught it and want to look your best onstage.

8. Respect Your Dresser and Their Timing

As an actor, make sure to respect your dresser and their timing by getting dressed when they need you to at every show. Don’t dillydally or wait until you’ve finished texting or getting the latest gossip from your friends. The person helping you change probably has somewhere else they need to be to ensure the performance goes off without a hitch.

9. Wear Everything You Have Been Given

Think you have a say in which costumes you can and can’t wear as an actor? Think again! That is the costume designer’s job. You need to make sure you respect them and wear everything you’ve been given or assigned.

Have any good tips or tricks for keeping your costume in good condition? Let us know in the comments below…

Part of the magic of putting on a big Broadway-style musical are the performers coming offstage and onstage at lightning speed with a change in costume. However, accomplishing a costume quick change is no easy task. Here are some tips so you can pull off one just like the Broadway pros do:

1. Quick-Rig All Costume Pieces

In this video, Dan Klarer shows us how a great quick-rig is done! “Quick-rig” is wardrobe speak for using velcro and snaps for any clothing that can’t come off with a quick tug. Change out all buttons, zippers and any closures in your costumes for these handy inventions to accomplish a quick change in record time.

You can also check out this handy guide from Psycho Seamstress that walks you through the steps of exchanging buttons for snaps.

How to Costume Rig a Button Down Garment for Quick Change

2. Elasticize All Shoes That Don’t Slip On and Off

Shoes can be some of the most difficult things to deal with during a quick change. When time is of the essence, you certainly don’t want to deal with knotted laces you can’t untie or straps that are hard to unbuckle in the dark. Elastic is a great cost-effective solution to solve these shoe issues. Replace any and all shoelaces with elastic, have them pre-tied in advance of the change and then you’re good to go.

The same goes for shoes with straps that have buckles. Replace those straps with elastic and get rid of the buckles altogether. If you’re worried about shoes coming off during dance numbers, use two pieces of elastic to create a crisscross shape on each individual shoe. Not only will each shoe remain snug for all the choreography, but they will come off with a gentle tug from the actor during the change.

3. Overdress and Underdress Costumes

This footage from the previous Broadway production of “Cinderella,” with glorious costumes by William Ivey Long, is a perfect example of both underdressing and overdressing costumes to create stage magic. While this may not work for every show you mount, it can make for a very quick change. It’s as easy as layering your clothing. This is really helpful for actors who may have to do a change without a helper. Even better, like the “CInderella” transformation seen here, this idea works when a change has to be done onstage and can’t be hidden from the audience.

Did you see how the “magic” worked in this change? If you blinked, you may have missed it! When Cinderella runs around in excitement about her dress changing, she quickly visits the side of the stage, where a dresser helps her to overdress the large skirt she needs for the final piece of her white ball gown.

4. Get Help from Others

This Tony Awards video of the Broadway company of “The King and I” certainly demonstrates the power of teamwork and timing in a quick change. You can take a lot from this video to help with your own quick-change adventures.

First, don’t be afraid to ask for help! It can sometimes take two or three people, depending on how many pieces of clothing the costume requires. Second, make sure each helper has a specific duty or piece of costume for which he or she is responsible during the change. Last, make sure you work together to figure out the best way to take everything on and off the actor in the most efficient way possible, just like these fabulous Broadway dressers do.

5. Create a Quick-Change Booth

This fun video from Center Theatre Group and the touring company of “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” create a space specifically dedicated to John Rapson’s quick change on the side of the stage. Being that many of his changes were so fast, it helps to save time so that he doesn’t have to go up to the dressing room every time a new costume is required.

To create your own quick-change booth, wall off an area with curtains, a few costume racks or behind a large set piece (just make sure it’s not one of the ones needed in any of the scenes coming up while you’re doing the change). Use clip lights to light the area, and place a rug or drop cloth (wardrobe speak for a piece of fabric) on the floor to protect actors’ costumes and feet from a dirty area and/or unwanted objects. Make sure the booth contains any items needed by hair, makeup and costumes for any changes that will be happening in it throughout the show.

6. Practice

As Mary Poppins would probably say, something “practically perfect” takes practice. And it’s very obvious in this video from the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway company of “Mary Poppins” that they have practiced this change to the point of perfection. Follow their lead and make sure you also practice your quick changes.

While practicing, make sure you rehearse the change in the space you’ll be using during the show and use similar lighting. You need to know before the performance whether you can actually see the clothing before you try the change. In addition, use a stopwatch and see how long it takes to accomplish this change so you can make sure the quick change will happen in the time allotted during the actual performance.

7. Use a Bite Lite

Not only are these dressers on the crew of “Beautiful” on Broadway doing brilliant quick changes, but they also have one thing in common: They all use a bite lite to accomplish their changes.

A bite lite is wardrobe speak for a very small flashlight you put in your mouth and hold with your teeth. Once bitten, it will light up, and your hands will be free for a quick change. It’s an essential tool for any backstage artist, especially where quick changes are concerned.

Even in the best light backstage, it can be hard to see zippers and small closures that blend in with fabrics. Using a bite lite ensures there will be no issues in locating them. So, make sure to always have one on hand. If you don’t have a pocket to store it in, tie it on a piece of ribbon or string around your neck.

If you are uncomfortable using a bite lite, pick up a headlamp from your nearest hardware store. Not only are they inexpensive, but they can be easily placed around your head. All you do is just switch it on for when the change happens and turn it off when you’re done.

8. Write Out How Your Quick Change Is Done

Lady Gaga and her dresser crew have this quick change down pat! However, what if something happened to one of the dressers in this video? What would they do? How do they keep making sure it’s carried out perfectly every time, no matter who the dresser is?

Well, of course, practice, but more importantly, they also make sure every step is written out so that no matter who is working the change, he or she will know exactly what to do.

This is imperative in case you have to switch out anyone helping with the show throughout the run. Remember that with every person doing a separate item on the change, things become complicated and people can forget everyone’s duties. Writing them down can be a saving grace should a last-minute replacement be needed. It also ensures your quick change will continue to run like clockwork and put the person subbing in at ease.

9. Communicate With Your Actor

Communication is key in a quick change — not just with the dressing team, but with the actor being dressed. It’s imperative to talk in advance about your game plan for the change and what the actor should know and do while the change occurs. Consequently, being open about how the quick change will go helps put the actor at ease during what can potentially be a very stressful time.

10. Don’t Let Others Interfere

This group at El Dorado Musical Theatre has the group quick change idea down to a science. Not only does each team do its specific job of changing a specific character, but none of the actors or team members interfere with the one they are not preset to be involved with.

Making sure unwanted hands or distractions stay out of quick changes is imperative. One false move or lost second can make the change go very wrong if the actor doesn’t make it onstage on time in the correct costume.

Though quick changes can take some time and some practice to nail down, the end result never ceases to stun and impress the audience.

If you are a theatre lover, you’ve probably wished at one time or another that your life was like a Broadway musical. Life would be incredible if it were socially acceptable to burst into a spontaneous musical number in public, complete with your own perfectly choreographed backup dancers.

Now, imagine for a moment that you could also have a Broadway character’s wardrobe, including all the dazzling colors, fabrics and accessories. *Insert longing sigh here*

Here are 10 Broadway characters closets we dream of raiding:

1. The Schuyler Sisters — “Hamilton”

It makes sense to start with the first ladies of Broadway: Angelica, Eliza (and Peggy). The beautiful colors of each gown pop from the stage, while each bodice has a design unique to each sister. They definitely know how to make those dresses work for them during the show, rocking the old-school frocks with the fierceness of Beyonce in hot pants.

2. Natasha Rostova — “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812”

This Russian romance just began its run on Broadway in November, and the costumes are stunning. The work of Tony Award-winning designer Paloma Young, all of the costumes in the show are a sight to behold. However, Natasha’s high-society gowns contain gorgeous beadwork and beautiful accessories that would look just perfect in your closet.

3. Corny Collins — “Hairspray”

Who doesn’t love a great suit? Corny’s wardrobe choices are about as colorful and fun as his personality. He manages to pull off outfits that would look downright tacky on anyone else. Case in point: Derek Hough, the most recent Corny Collins, looked nothing but sleek in a variety of flashy suits during “Hairspray Live!”

4. Glinda — “Wicked”

If you were ever, ever envious of Barbie’s wardrobe, take a stroll through Glinda’s closet. The bright colors, sequins and variety of silhouettes make for dreamy ensembles full of feminine flair.

5. Gigi — “Gigi”

Designer Catherine Zuber took an old classic and made it modern in the recent revival of “Gigi.” The couture gowns seen onstage are worthy of any awards show red carpet. The chic French styles are any fashionista’s dream.

6. Reno Sweeney — “Anything Goes”

Let’s begin by saying that Sutton Foster could wear a paper bag and still look amazing. However, she’s certainly not the only actress to play the spunky Reno Sweeney, whose wardrobe is 1930s perfection. Wide-legged pants, fabulous dresses and nautical-inspired pieces are flawless retro fashion.

7. William Shakespeare — “Something Rotten”

Leather, leather and more leather. Shakespeare has the suave style of an ‘80s rockstar. Created by popular Broadway costume designer Gregg Barnes, the fitted jacket and knee-high leather boots see the old-school playwright bringing sexy back.

8. Sandy — “Grease”

Continuing on the leather theme, who hasn’t wanted to be Bad Sandy with her red high heels and leather pants? From cool to cute, her poodle skirts are equally adorable. Sandy’s wardrobe is certainly versatile, with an outfit for every mood.

9. Lola — “Kinky Boots”

There are too many fabulous boots to count. Combine them with the sparkle, the wigs and the extensive array of makeup, and we’ve got a winner. Besides knowing how to make boots, Lola certainly knows how to wear them. Fashion is an art form in this closet.

10. Elle Woods — “Legally Blonde”

What we want? Elle Woods’ stylish, Carrie-Bradshaw-sized closet. She takes boring work wardrobes and gives them the makeover we all crave. The clothes are as sassy as her spunky personality and certainly jealousy-inducing.

1. It’s totally fine to inform me if there’s a problem with your costume.

I’m here to help you tell the story of the show as best as you can. That can’t happen if your shoes are too small, your pants too big, or if you keep tripping on your skirt’s hem. I’m happy to resolve any issues, but you have to communicate with me.

2. At the same time, don’t be a diva.

Your costume might not fit your personal style, but it does fit the overall look of the show. Despite what you might think, I have spent a lot of time thinking about the way you’ll look on stage. So if you’re playing a poor farmer, please don’t come to me complaining that you don’t look “cute” enough. Also, I don’t have control over everything. Many details come from the director’s concept, so if you have an issue you’ll have to take it up with him or her.

3. I don’t care what your body looks like.

You were cast in this play because the director thought that you were the best actor for the job. Period. Besides, I’ve seen it all. So there is no need to be embarrassed about your weight, height, stretch marks, acne, etc.

4. Your underclothes really do matter.

If I ask you to wear a certain kind of underwear/bra/dance belt it’s because your costume won’t look right if you don’t. If I ask you to bring said underwear/bra/dance belt to a fitting, please do. I need to know exactly how you’re going to look on stage. Same goes for shoes.

5. It’s worth your time to be nice to me.

First of all, I’m an industry professional. The same industry that you’re trying to break into. I know a lot of other costume designers, actors, and directors, and if you’re rude your name will come up. And you really can’t afford to burn bridges. Secondly, I have the power to make you look bad on stage. So be nice.

6. You need to know that costumes take a really long time to make.

I had to buy a pattern, choose fabrics, cut out the pattern pieces, sew them together, alter them to your body … you see where this is going. The process takes a lot of time and effort. Even if I bought or reused old costumes, choosing them took many, many hours. So please treat them with respect. Every time an actor throws a costume on the floor, eats in costume, or gets makeup on a costume, a designer’s soul dies a little bit.

Are you a costume designer? What else would you like actors to know? Leave a reply below…

Working in student theatre has taught me a great many things including but not limited to, how to iron crayon out of a carpet, the cure for stage fright, and what to do when there is a lice outbreak during the second performance of a three show run thanks to a cast member’s younger sibling . True stories all of them. But I think I have learned the most about how to facilitate a show on a tight budget, especially in the area that often sucks up the most money: costumes. I have become somewhat of a wizard in this arena. Like the cool Harry Potter kind. Think Hermione shocking everyone by pulling everything they need out of that ridiculously tiny bag.

Here are a few ways to costume your show on a very tight budget:

Thrift Shops

When I worked at a summer theater camp where we were costuming five shows a summer on an extremely tight budget, the staff at the local thrift shop knew me by name. It’s a great place to pick up specific pieces or even find items that can be used to make what you need. I once bought twenty oversized white t-shirts for $1 each and made them into togas for an entire youth cast of Hercules by cutting off the neck and left sleeve and adding braided rope for a belt. Three-quarters of the cast were costumed for under thirty dollars! Which segues nicely into my next suggestion…

DIY

Get your inner Martha Stewart on! Pinterest is chalk full of ideas if you are finding it hard to imagine how to make a specific piece. Don’t feel like you have to reinvent the wheel; you are busy enough. Once, after several attempts to make a Paper Bag Princess costume out of a lawn bag only to have it tear each time, I turned to Pinterest and found trick involving velcro and a duct tape shell. It worked like a charm, and that singular paper bag dress made it through three dress rehearsals and four shows with no rips or tears.

Donation List for the Cast & Crew

You would be surprised what people have lying around at home that they are willing to donate or loan you. I once had a girl bring in a pink dress that her grandmother was generous enough to donate that was almost identical to Liesel’s dress in The Sound of Music. Not only did we use it for a production of Sound of Music, but it also went on to be used in three other shows. I’ve found it helpful to give your cast and crew a list of costume or prop pieces needed and see what is brought in. You might be pleasantly surprised. Plus, they’re free! Win!

Cheap Supplies

Dollar stores are your friend. They don’t have completed costumes, but they hold the elements to make them cheaply if you can get creative. I once made a Mike Wazowski costume using two green toilet seat covers, cardboard, elastic and fun foam, all for the low price of four dollars. Dig deep and use your imagination. If you find you do need something from the higher priced craft stores, scour the Internet for a coupon first. My favorite crafting chain often offers fifty percent off on any regular priced item. Some stores will donate if you explain what it’s for and offer to thank them in your program. While trying to build a bridge for one of our shows, I went to Home Depot to purchase plywood. When the sales associate helping me heard what I was buying the wood for, he showed me the pile of scrap wood they can’t sell and told me to help myself. It didn’t cost a cent.

Renting or Borrowing From Local Theatre Companies

Some places will be very generous and loan them to you for free (sometimes with the incentive of a name drop in the program as thanks). Others will rent them to you for a discounted rate. If you are smart about it, this can be worth your while. A friend at a local theater company loaned us a lion costume one summer and to make the most of the opportunity, we staged Wicked, High School Musical and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe all in the same summer. That lion costume showed up in all three shows. Even if you rent or borrow just one piece, decide what you can get the most use out of and go for that.

Get Creative

I think I’ve emphasized this a few times already, but the most important thing is to be creative with what you’ve got. Part of what I love about the stage version of The Lion King is the creative way it is costumed. Instead of people in animal suits like mascots, the costumes are made up of unique elements that support and tell the story with each performer’s movement and expression. Don’t be frightened away from staging the show you want because it has ambitious costumes or props. After weeks of wracking our brains for how to make our version of Defying Gravity have as much impact as the Broadway version, without a budget for rigging, we opted for a very tall ladder. Draping it in yards of black fabric and attaching more black fabric to Elphaba’s back, which crew members pinned to the side curtains to hold them up, it actually looked pretty impressive. No, it wasn’t the same way it is performed in the original show, but many members of the audience couldn’t tell it was a ladder and commented after that it was their favorite part of the show because of the way we had staged it.
