Love. It is something (most) people want or have. It runs rampant through the theatre, with Shakespeare’s original plays such as Romeo and Juliet. Musicals keep romance in theatre going and kept it going strong. Tell me your favourite couples of musicals!
#1 Guy and Girl (Once)
Once is a beautiful show and one of my favourites ever! One of the main reasons is because of this couple. Their love isn't forced and reflects real life love. It isn't always simple.
#2 Huey and Felicia (Memphis)
Huey and Felicia's relationship is powerful because it is set in a time where relationships like theirs were very unacceptable. It adds to the effectiveness of the strength and strain of their relationship.
#3 Edna and Wilbur (Hairspray)
Edna is now an iconic character in modern musical theatre. But what would she be without her husband Wilbur? Even when Edna is prejudiced, Wilbur is always there and they are timeless together.
#4 Leo and Lucille (Parade)
The fact that their relationship is real makes their story all the more heart breaking. If you don't know, Parade is about Leo getting arrested for raping and muredering a young girl who worked at his factory. Leo and Lucille fight against anti-semitism to get Leo's freedom.
#5 George and Albin (La Cage Aux Folles)
In the show that broke barriers on the representation of homosexuals in musical theatre, you would need a well represented couple to put your point across. Luckily, George and Albinare well represented, well performed and show genuine affection and respect for each other.
#6 All the Couples (Company)
I can't just choose one of the couple's of this musical, so why not just put them all together! All couples are unique in their own way and have different strains and different affections towards each other and all of them are super realistic.
#7 Georges and Amalia (She Loves Me)
At the start of the show, these two do not get along. As the show carries on, they show more and more affection, leading to adorable and hilarious antics.
#8 Tony and Maria (West Side Story)
Isn't this one obvious? Being the new Romeo and Juliet that they would show genuine affection and love towards each other. Too bad it only lasts a few days.
#9 Ti Moune and Daniel
Considering the choice that Ti Moune makes at the end of the show, we can say that these two are eternal (whether literally or not)
#10 Tracy and Link (Hairspray)
Whether they're dancing their hearts out, rising to fame or marching for black rights, this couple broke the stereotype and showed their teen fans both in Baltimore and in the real world that love isn't just about looks, it's so much deeper.
Like her mother, Tracy found a man who loves her curves as much as he loves her. This couple was a huge reminder to all the girls out there who didn't fit the stereotypical look that they can still find a man who loves them "no matter what they weigh"!
Plus they're relationship is totally relate-able for all the teens in the world, who like Tracy and her beau, are horny AF
#11 Peter and Jason (Bare)
#12 Emile de Becque and Nellie Forbush (South Pacific)
While most musical couples from the "golden age" are corny and fake, this is one of the most real, heart-throbbing romances of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals. Between war, the military, and dark secrets, the romance of this WWII couple in the south Pacific Ocean is gripping.
