Professor Bhaer writes to Jo about his life in New York.
View Lyrics
PROFESSOR BHAER (reads from a letter, spoken): 'And how are you, sir?'

(Sung) She asks how I am. And so: how am I? My days are the usual days. I wake up, I go out. Time goes by.

My days are exactly the days I have lived since arriving here. In fact, how I am is amazed how this comforts me year by year. I work and I eat. Life is muffins and jam. The house is nice and quiet now. That is how I am.

Five years in these rooms reading Hegel and Kant. My mind is devoted to thoughts of the meaning of life. What more could I want? So why is it lately I find I'm uneasy all through the night? And why even now does my skin feel explosive as dynamite? Why does my heart pound like a battering ram? How can she ask me how I am? How I am is fine!

(Begins to write a letter back) 'Dear Miss March, there is nothing dramatic or new to report. This will be short. Morning and evening I live in my usual way. On the day you return you will see for yourself! Tell me, Miss March, are you happy so far From the clang and the beat of our turbulent street? Quite often I think of our days in New York. Though of course since you went I have quite content.'

(Rips the letter up) ACH! I wake up in the morning and all that I hear is the absence of sound. YES! My peace is disturbed but the ruckus is me as my thought run aground. I wanted a life by myself in these rooms. But now all around me another life looms. Who asked her to come and go and to leave me like that? And now she expects me to send her a note? With words, if I spoke, that would stick in my throat! Who asked her to change how I live, how I think, how I am?

She asks how I am. How can I reply? I go through my daily routine. I give lessons, I wait. Time goes by.

Yet lately I find there is pleasure in humming a silly tune. And some days I go to the park and I sit there all afternoon. Some evenings I swear I can hear a door slam. The house is far to quiet now. That is how I am.

Charlie Brown arduously tries to get his kite to fly.
View Lyrics
Little more speed, little more rope, Little more wind, little more hope, Gotta get this stupid kite to fly. Gotta make sure it doesn't snag Doesn't droop, doesn't drag Gotta watch out for ev'ry little- whoops!
Little less speed, little more tack, Little less rise, little more slack, Gotta keep my wits about me now. Gotta make sure it doesn't get the best of me Till I get it in the air somehow.
Millions of little kids do it ev'ry day They make a kite and-"poof"- it's in the sky. Leave it to me to have the one fool kite Who likes to see a little kid cry.
Little less talk, little more skill, Little less luck, little more will, Gotta face this fella eye to eye. Now that I've seen you chasing moles, Climbing trees, digging holes, Catching your string on everything passing by Why not fly?
Wait a minute, What's it doing? It isn't on the ground. It isn't in a tree. It's in the air!
Look at at that. It's caught the breeze now, It's past the trees now With room to spare...
Oh- What a beautiful sight. And I'm not such a clumsy guy. If I really try I can really Fly a ki-

Pontius Pilate retells a dream in which he will be entirely blamed for Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.
View Lyrics
PILATE I dreamed I met a Galilean; A most amazing man. He had that look you very rarely find: The haunting, hunted kind.
I asked him to say what had happened, How it all began. I asked again, he never said a word. As if he hadn't heard.
And next, the room was full of wild and angry men. They seemed to hate this man. They fell on him, and then They disappeared again.
Then I saw thousands of millions Crying for this man. And then I heard them mentioning my name, And leaving me the blame.

Stine experiences the collapse of his real and fictional worlds.

Funny, How'd I fail to see this little bed time tale was funny? I could cry to think of all the irony i've missed! What an unusual twist Right at the end of it

Funny, Who could see that this pathetic scene would be So funny Once you strain to find the grain of humor Underneath Life double crosses with style Forcing you into a smile So it can kick you in the teeth

Just desserts We can all laugh till it hurts At my expense I'm accustomed to working on "spec" I always pick up the check

I think it's funny Who could top or make this comic op'ra more Compelling You could weave in some deceit to even up the Score

You'd have us all on the floor That would be roaringly funny Sad enough my life's a joke that suffers in the telling Just another hoary chestnut from the bottom drawer I've heard so often before That I can't laugh anymore

Kerchak has just exiled Tarzan from the gorilla clan.
View Lyrics
KERCHAK My worst fear I hold it now I always knew that this would happen Though he's a child its in his blood And he will grow So now its clear what I must do I know too well what he'll become For as long as I draw breath I'll remember

KALA (spoken) Wheres Tarzan? Where is he?

KERCHAK No turning back Whats done is done I have seen what they can do He can't be saved by you, by me It's too late

KALA (spoken) No, I wont let you do this. How can you think-

KERCHAK No more fighting. I'll be obeyed I'll stand my ground Don't dare defy me I know his kind I know the truth I will protect us

No other way Open your eyes It's there to see No other way He's not one of us And never will be

KALA (spoken) Just listen to me

KERCHAK No more to say He is what he is And that won't change There's no other way I am leaving him here And here he'll stay

KALA (spoken) Hes just a child

KERCHAK He was up in the trees Making a weapon And in time it is us He will hurt

KALA (spoken) No

KERCHAK Nothing and no one Will stop him becoming What he is And was by blood

No other way He won't come between me And those I love Believe me when I say With my body and soul This I vow

KALA (spoken) But I need him!

KERCHAK No, no other way And in spite of your pain It will be done

No matter what you say He never was or could be Be my son There is no other way

I won't let him near the rest of the tribe again

KALA I understand

KERCHAK Where are you going?

KALA To find him We'll live away from the family

KERCHAK For how long?

KALA For as long as he needs me

KERCHAK You can't. I wont be able to protect you Kala don't do this. Please.

KALA Kerchak I'm his mother

KERCHAK No other way I should have done this before Long ago And from today Though they'll think of me cruel They won't know There was no other way.

Archibald feels defeated and frustrated by possibly losing Mary to Neville and boarding school.

ARCHIBALD Now I see you in the window Of a carraige, then a train. Still my mind will not accept that In your grave you must remain. I hear your voice then turn and See a stranger's form and face. Must I wander on tormented Place to place to place to place!

Where can I go that you won't find me? Why can't I find a place to hide? Why do you want to chase me, haunt me? Every step there, beside me.

Where in the world, tell me, where in the world Can I live without your love? Where on the earth, tell me where on the earth Should I stay now that you are gone?

Why did I have to meet you, love you? Why can't I rid you from my mind? Why did you have to want me? Won't you let me put my life behind me?

How in the world, tell me how in the world Can I live without your love? Why on the earth, tell me, why on the earth Should I stay now that you are gone? Now that you are...

(spoken) Lily, is that you?

In my gray flannel suit, In my new, shiny car, In my split level house, With my big, black cigar, Can't you picture me?

I will follow you, I will follow you To what may be a strange and alone world. For I know I'd be lost in my own world, If you're not part of it too.

I will follow you, I am ready to go Wherever you happen to lead me, Just in case you might happen to need me, All that you have to do is turn around, For I'll be following you.

As a poor child, Valentin learned that if freedom would not come tomorrow, it would come eventually.
View Lyrics
VALENTIN It was made out of mud And pieces of tin And boxes nailed together Cardboard boxes My castle My home
And we slept on the floor My sister and I With gunny sacks for our pillows Coughing, hungry, cosy My home
And every Sunday on our knees We would thank the Lord For his bountiful blessings
And our mother poured soup Into little cracked bowls As she spoke of something better Beef steak, maybe, someday My home
And that lady had eyes That were empty and cold At the ripe old age of thirty Death came Welcome To my home
And still that Sunday On our knees How we thanked the Lord For his bountiful blessings
And my sister and I Swore the day that we left There'd be no more children like us In the filth there, in the heat there. In the smell there
And no more Sundays On our knees Would we thank the Lord For his bountiful blessings
And we came to the city And begged for our food Then, one April day we heard it Thunder rumbling One man speaking Thousands singing...
Someday we'll be free I promise you, we'll be free If not tomorrow Then the day after that
And the candles in our hands Will illuminate this land If not tomorrow Then the day after that
And the world that gives us pain That fills our lives with fear On the day after that Will disappear
And the war we've fought to win I promise you, we will win If not tomorrow Then the day after that Or the day after that

CHORUS & VALENTIN Someday we'll be free I promise you, we'll be free If not tomorrow Then the day after that

And the candles in our hands Will illuminate this land If not tomorrow Then the day after that
And the world that gives us pain That fills our lives with fear On the day after that Will disappear Will disappear
Will disappear
And the war we've fought to win I promise you, we will win If not tomorrow Then the day after that Or the day after that Or the day after that Or the day after that Or the day after that Or the day After that!

Don't panic, don't jump ship Can't find it, like taxes At least it happens Only once in your life
They're singing, "Happy Birthday" You just wanna lay down and cry Not just another birthday, it's 30/90 Why can't you stay 29? Hell, you still feel like you're 22 Turn 30, 1990 Bang! You're dead, what can you do? What can you do? What can you do?
MICHAEL Clear the runway Make another pass Try one more approach Before you're out of gas
JONATHAN Friends are getting fatter Hairs on you head are getting thinner Feel like a clean up batter On a team that ain't a winner
MICHAEL Don't freak out, don't strike out Can't fight it, like City Hall
JONATHAN
At least you're not alone Your friends are there, too
BOTH They're singing, "Happy Birthday" You just wish you could run away Who cares about a birthday? But 30/90, hey
Can't you be optimistic? You're no longer the ingenue Turn 30, 1990 Voom! You're passe What can you do? What can you do? What can you do?
JONATHAN
Peter Pan and Tinkerbell
Which way to Never Never Land? Emerald City's gone to hell Since the Wizard blew off his command
On the streets you hear the voices Lost children, crocodiles But you're not into Making choices, wicked witches, Poppy fields or men behind the curtains, Tiger lilies,
Ruby slippers Clock is ticking, that's for certain
They're singing, "Happy Birthday" I just wish it all were a dream It feels much more like Doomsday f**k, 30/90
Seems like I'm in for a twister I don't see a rainbow, do you? Turn 30 in the 90's
Into my hands now The ball is passed I want the spoils, but not too fast The world is calling It's now or Neverland Why can't I stay a child forever and - 30/90 30/90 30/90 30/90 30/90 30-30/90 What can I do? What can I do?

Trina is struggling to cope with Whizzer's mysterious illness.

TRINA I was sure growing up I would live the life My mother assumed I'd live Very Jewish, very middle-class, and very straight Where healthy men stayed healthy men And marriages were long and great I smile I don't complain

I'm trying to keep sane as the rules keep changing Families aren't what they were Thank God there's a husband and a child whom I adore But then there's more So many more There's always more

Life is never what you planned Life is moments you can't understand And that is life I'm plain I don't astound

I hold to the ground As the ground keeps shifting Keeping my balance square Trying not to care about this man who Marvin loves But that's my life He shared my life Yes, that's my life

Life is never what you planned Life is moments you can't understand And that is life

Holding to the ground As the ground keeps shifting Trying to keep sane As the rules keep changing Keeping up my head As my heart falls out of sight Everything will be all right Everything will be all right

Context & Lyrics
