Sopranos. The Classic ingenue or damsel in distress. Quite frequently sopranos are put into the box of being the princess. Even though most modern musical theatre songs are written for Mezzo-belters, there are still some good audition songs out there for sopranos.
#1 Some Things Are Meant To Be – Little Women
This song is actually a duet, and I don't really know much about Little Women. The song is sung by Sutton Foster and Megan McGinnis. It's not a princess song but, if you're a young soprano try this one.
#2 Urinetown – I See A River
This song is not meant to be taken seriously at all. If you're more of a character actress or just want to make someone laugh try this song. This whole musical is satire if you need to find something funny.
#3 I Don’t Know What I’d Do Without You- GGLAM
#4 Many A New Day- Oklahoma
Here's a golden age classic. In an age of damsels, Laurey from Oklahoma stands out. She's okay with falling in love but she's also fiercely independent.
#5 I Have a Dream- Mamma Mia!
"I have a dream" can work for your audition if you want something a bit more modern or if you're new to the theatre world. All of the music in Mamma Mia is by the Swedish pop group ABBA.
#6 Hello Young Lovers- The King and I
Anna Leowens is too old to be a young ingenue. If you're an older soprano looking for a classical ballad say Hello to this song. You'll love it!
#7 Beggar Woman’s Lullaby- Sweeney Todd
Now for something completely different... The Beggar Woman from Sweeney Todd. A very uncommon song to be sung. This number was written for the London production. Queen Audra McDonald has sung this role twice in the New York Philharmonic concert in 2000 and 2014.
#8 Love makes such fools of us all- Barnum
Wanna try and sing in Swedish? Can you sing in Swedish? Are you an opera singer? Try singing Jenny Lind's song from Barnum "Love makes such fools of us all".
#9 What Kind of Woman- Ragtime
This song is sung by the late Marin Mazzie. In "What Kind of Woman", the character Mother is brought to the attention that a baby that might be one of her maid's has been left in the bushes of her home.
#10 My Most Beautiful Day- Tuck Everlasting
Tuck Everlasting wasn't on Broadway for very long. From it, sopranos have gotten a wonderful song. In "My most beautiful day", Mae Tuck sings about her wedding day and how beautiful she felt.
