I’m a huge dreamer when it comes to musicals. I have a lot of ideas that can totally work in my head, but practically, they probably would need a lot of work to get off the ground. They also might end up being huge flops. But a girl can dream, can’t she? So, here are five books and movies that I think could totally be musicals someday.
#1 The Perks of Being A Wallflower
I know this has been brought up before, but for real! How cool would this be? As much as the book and movie dig deep into Charlie's emotions, songs tend to allow us all to live through the character's pain and deep emotions. And with all the amazing music in the film, we could totally get a 90's vibe from this show! Who wouldn't love that?
#2 Dead Poets Society
This particular work of art is my favorite movie, but it is also a book as well! Fun fact! I really have no clue how this would work, but with the main character delving into acting, I would like to see his self-exploration through song. Other than that, I have no ideas. But you never know if you never try!
#3 A Wrinkle In Time
This happens to be my favorite book, but it is also a movie and is being remade this year. This particular story has a lot of science fiction elements, and it has a lot of set and costume elements that would be super interesting to witness. The music could really breach new territory for the theatre community too! So many new opportunities! Let's get on this people!
#4 13 Reasons Why
13 Reasons Why is also a favorite book of mine, but it's known more so because of the Netflix series that came out in March. This would be honestly super depressing, but Dear Evan Hansen and Next to Normal are both also about suicide and depression, mental illness, and other really serious topics. I would like to see how they would portray such sensitive issues onstage.
#5 Fangirl
This is a fantastic book by Rainbow Rowell about a freshman in college who finds solace in writing fanfiction. I think it'd be incredibly interesting to see how they portray all of the emotions that come with starting college. All the fears, all the insecurities. As an incoming college freshman, I would be really interested to see this show.
