Don’t forget the altos! Altos can be such a powerhouse in musical theatre. Altos and Mezzo Belters get some of the best songs. Here are 10 songs for altos you may not have considered.
#1 I’m not at all in Love- The Pajama Game
This one's a bit old. Babe Williams from The Pajama Game might be considered as a mezzo but don't let that stop you from declaring that you're not at all in love.
#2 Some People- Gypsy
The role of Rose has been played been legendary actresses Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters, Patti Lupone, and Imelda Staunton. This song is filled with purpose and an ambitious drive.
#3 Invisible- Women on the verge of a Nervous Breakdown
#4 Never Never Land- Peter Pan
Peter Pan is usually played by a woman. This role has been made famous by Cathy Rigby and Mary Martin. So it makes sense why the role of Peter can be sung by an alto or a countertenor. If you're a younger alto, give this a one a try.
#5 Forever Beautiful- War Paint
Patti Lupone is the Queen of 11 o'clock numbers. This one is meant for older altos if you're auditioning for something like Gypsy. It's a fairly new song so it would be pretty uncommon to hear it in an audition.
#6 Charming- Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
Helene Kuragina is a very elegant but serpent-like woman. If you love playing those characters and can sing in French this might be an interesting song for you!
#7 Thank God I’m Old- Barnum
#8 Right Hand Man- Something Rotten
This one might be also suited for a Mezzo-Belter. If you want to try something funny here you go.
#9 Millwork- Working
Working was written by Stephen Schwartz with a compilation of other artists. This song was written by James Taylor. If you're looking for something unique with an earthy feel "Millwork" is the song for you.
#10 Shine- Billy Elliot
As you know, the music in Billy Elliot was written by Elton John. This song is sung by the dance teacher Mrs. Wilkinson. Rember to just Shine!
