Inspired by The Addams Family, you won't be able to get the classic theme song out of your head as you fuel ghosts and goblins with sugary goodies."] Happy Halloween! Are you ready for another Theatre Nerds DIY? Today we will be making our very own Addam's Family: Cousin It Candy Jar-just in time for the spooky holidays!

Lets get started:

What you will need: -Mason Jar -Tiny Hat (Found at Joann's Fabrics in the doll section) -Tan Yarn -Scissors -Sticky Black Felt -Tape To begin we will start by making our hair! Lay out a strip of tape 12" long sticky side up. Using smaller strips of tape, hold down the strip so it doesn't move. With your yarn, begin to loop the yarn back and forth about 6 inches long. Place the yarn as low as you can on the tape to help make a smaller band later on. Keep the yarn as tight as you can to each other for a fuller look. Once you have reached the end, take your scissors, and cut the loops, not attached to the tape to make them singular strands. After they have all been cut, fold your tape over onto itself to sandwich the yarn. Cut off the excess tape for a thinner strip. Since we need to wrap the mason jar completely, repeat these steps until you have 10 strips of hair! Now that you have your hair, we can begin to attach them to the jar! Starting from the bottom, place the first strip of hair around the jar into the desired placement. Once it has been positioned, tape each end together and secure onto the jar. Continue to repeat this pattern all the way up to the top of the jar. Once you have reached the neck of the mason jar, take your extra yarn and wrap it around to cover it up completely. Now it's time to make Cousin It's sunglasses! Using your sticky backed felt, flip it over so the backing is facing up. Draw out a pair of sunglasses and cut them out. Remove the backing and place onto the yarn/mason jar where his eyes should be. Lastly, once everything has been put together, place your favorite candies and treats inside of the jar. You are now ready to add his final element, his hat to seal the deal! Now you not only have a fun new jar, but a great halloween decoration to add to your collection! We hope you had fun doing this DIY with us! Please like, comment and share if you participated by making this Addam's Family DIY! Have a fun and safe Halloween & happy crafting! Why? Why NOTTTTTTTT!!!!!” Aside from cat videos and prank videos, YouTube is an incredible tool for entertainers in the musical theatre field.   Welcome back to another Theatre Nerds DIY! Today we will be doing a Mean Girls Burn Book (bag)!

What You'll Need:

-pink tote bag (or any color, then paint pink) -black and white fabric -Black, white and red puffy paint -Scissors -fabric glue -Burn Book photo reference

Instructions:

To begin, rip small, varying sizes of the black and white fabric. It helps to get an image reference online of what the real Burn Book looks like. Have enough scraps for each letter to spell out "Burn Book". Once you have your eight pieces, begin to write in each letter onto each piece. Using the photo, you'll be able to get specific details of each unique letter. Once you have done this, put the letters to the side to dry. Puffy paint takes up to 4 hours to  completely settle, place them in the sun to speed up the process! While your lettering are drying, bring out your black puffy paint to begin to do the detailing on the bag. Since most of it is scribbling, the combination of photo referencing as well as just having fun will do the job! Allow everything to dry for 4 hours! Once your lettering and bag has dried, you can finally place your "Burn Book" letters in place. Once they are positioned in your ideal spot, go ahead and take your glue, and adhere the fabric to the tote bag. For the finale touch, we will find center between "Burn" and "book" to place our iconic lipstick kiss. Using your puffy paint, draw out an simple lip smack to finish off the look! Once everything is dry, you are now able to flaunt your new Mean Girls bag around town! We can't wait for it to open on Broadway this month. Welcome back to another Theatre Nerds DIY! In this video we will be creating the rose from Beauty and the Beast. Hope you guys enjoy, and please don’t forget to leave comments and suggestions for future projects you would like to see.

What You Need:

-Bell Jar (I purchased mine at Ikea with the option of gold of wood base)

-x2 Roses (One that will go inside the jar, another that will be used for extra petals and leafs)

-Scissors

-Hot Glue

-Green Clay

-Battery powered fairy lights

Instructions:

First, measure your rose to your bell jar and make sure you leave some room so it can be bent to give it its welting look. Cut the excess stem and put to the side. If your flower has too many leafs, trim to your liking.

From the extra rose, cut off some petals that will be placed at the base of the jar. Adhere them to the base with hot glue.

Once the rose is the correct size, create a small mound of clay in the center of the base and place the stem inside it. Stabilize the rose on the base while placing the glass overtop. For added fun, take your fairy lights and wrap them around the base of the bell jar.

After the lights have been wrapped, you are all done and have finished your very own Beauty and the Beast rose!

Hope you all enjoyed this tutorial! Send and tag us in photos of your own rose.

Happy DIY’ing-see you next time!

Supply list:

  • Small Clock-available at target for $4 or your local thrift store
  • White acrylic paint
  • Alphabet stickers-1 inch (any color you'd like! We used gold)

Instructions:

Welcome back to another Theatre Nerds DIY. In this tutorial we will be making a Seasons of Love clock from one of our favorite musicals-Rent! To create this Rent clock, you will have to start by getting a clock. You can purchase one at either target or your local thrift store. If the face of the clock has numbers on it, you will need to remove the backing and separate the pieces. Once you have done that, take your white acrylic paint and begin to cover the face of the clock. It may take a couple coats so go ahead and use a hairdryer to speed up the process until it is completely white and dry. After you have completed this step, take your 1 inch alphabet stickers and begin to write out your message. Starting at the top, begin with mapping out "525,600". Following that, start at where the 9 would be located and begin to place the letters down to write out "seasons of love". Once that is complete, finish your Rent clock by centering the word "minutes" between the hands of the clock. After all of your lettering's have been place, go ahead and place the glass and backing back on your clock and you are all finished! Just pop in some batteries and you got yourself your very own Rent clock! Thank you for joining us for another fun Theatre Nerds DIY. Welcome back to another Theatre Nerds DIY project!
Today we will be making a No-Sew Pie Pillows, inspired by our beloved show, Waitress!

To begin this project, what you will need is:

  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Glue (you can use both fabric glue, or hot glue)
  • Pom Poms
  • Felt (light brown, brown, red and blue)
  • Stuffing

Instructions:

*In the tutorial I only showed working on one pillow, if you care to make more than one, just repeat the same process!* 1. We will start off by measuring out on our light brown felt, a 12 inch circle to create as the body of the pie. You will need to make two of these, as these pieces will become the pouch to make the pillow. 2. Using your fabric glue, glue 3/4 of the two light brown felt pieces together. We want to leave a hole to later fill with stuffing. Allow the pieces to sit to the side and dry. 3. After making our pie crust, take your “pie filling” color of your choosing (in the video I made a red cherry pie) and measure out an 11 inch circle. This piece will sit inside of the pie crust we just made. Once that is cut out, adhere the filling piece to the crust and let dry. 4. To make the top crust pieces, we will be taking our darker brown felt pieces, and creating strips to later weave together. I used 8 strips per pie, however you can make yours smaller, or bigger-to your liking. 5. Once the pillow has finished drying, take your brown strips and begin to weave them together using the over under method. Once you have completed this, go ahead and glue the pieces to the top piece of felt and let dry. 6. For fun decoration, take your pom poms (berries for us) and decorate the top of the pie as you see fit. This gives it a fun and cute flare! Glue the pom poms onto the desired area and set it to the side. 7. Make sure your pillow is completely dry before beginning the stuffing process. Using your own personal preferences, fill the pillow to your desired need, without filling it too much and popping the seams. Once you have filled your pillow, carefully glue the small hole closed to complete the pillow. And there it is! An adorable, no-sew pie pillow! This will get any sweet tooth jealous of your delicious taste and skills. Thank you for watching! Follow Katie on Instagram for more fun projects @kbettiniart Happy Crafting! What you will need:

  • White paint
  • Brown paint
  • Gold paint
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • White pencil
  • Paint Brushes
  • Laptop Case

Instructions:

First, you will want to start by painting both edges of the case gold to create the golden ticket. Paint both sides about 2 inches wide. After finishing, allow it to completely dry. Using the Wonka Bar logo as reference, take your white pencil and begin to trace out the font of the label of the candy bar onto the laptop case. This will help create a guideline for us later. After you have drawn your complete “Wonka Bar” label, plug in your hot glue gun and begin to trace and fill it in completely. Helpful tip: Use a Popsicle stick to help smooth out the hot glue. Please be careful while using the hot glue gun, they can get extremely hot. Once your Wonka Bar has been completely filled in, allow it to dry completely. Onto the painting! We will be breaking down each section into different colors. “Wonka” will be in white, “Bar” in gold, and Mr.Wonka’s hat will be painted brown. Paint each section in their correct color until it is completely covered. Set aside so it can completely dry. After the laptop case has dried, you are done! You are ready to show off your new laptop case to all of your friends. But be careful, you may forever crave chocolate when you carry this around. And don’t forget, you are more than welcome to take creative freedom of this project-switch up colors, different font-whatever YOU want! It is your project! Have fun! In this tutorial we will be making Hamilton pins and key chains!

For this project you will need:

  • Shrink Film (super sanded)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Hole Punch
  • Flat Pins
  • Key Rings
  • Permanent Markers
  • Printable PDF (attached in the description)
See below this post for recommended products

Instructions:

1. Begin your project by printing out your reverse copy of Hamilton pins/key chains. Download Here 2. With your super sanded Shrink Film, place shiny side face down, sanded side face up. 3. Using your permanent markers, begin tracing and filling in your images. You are free to use whatever colors you’d like, or design your own pins and key chains! 4. Once dried, begin cutting out your images. For the pins, make sure you are cutting as close as you can to the lines. When making a key chain, allow yourself some extra space to punch a hole in BEFORE you bake them in the oven. 5. After cutting out your pins and key chains, turn your oven to 350°. With a small cookie sheet lined with either non-stick aluminum foil, baking paper, or thin cardboard, place your images in small groups with distance from one another so they do not touch. Make sure the pieces are shiny face DOWN, sanded side UP. Warning, please be careful, the oven and cookie sheets are very hot. if you are under the age of 13, please ask an adult for help* 6. Allow them to bake for 2-3 minutes. They will curl up at first, but will lay flat again, so do not take them out before then. After the 3 minutes have passed, take your shrunk Hamilton art out of the oven, and with a spatula, lightly flatten them if they are slightly curled. Once cooled remove them from the cookie sheet. 7. After everything is completely cooled, you are now ready to attach your pins and key rings! With the key rings, simply open the ring and insert it into the hole you created before baking. For the pins, take the flat backing of the pin with a dab of glue (hot glue, E600, etc) and place on the sanded side of your art. Allow the glue to dry completely before using.

Finished!

Once everything has dried, you are now ready to wear your pins on your clothes, backpack or favorite Hamilton shirt! Don’t forget to clip on your key chain as well! Share with us your version of Hamilton Key Chains and Pins on our Facebook and Instagram page. We can’t wait to see what you have done! The Materials! For this project, all you will need is:

  • Paint Pens (can be purchased at any craft store-you may use any combination of colors that you like)
  • Clear Phone Case (Sold in stores, but cheaper on Amazon. All phone types available)
See below this post for recommended products

Instructions:

1. Begin creating your “Waving Through A Window” window by shaping out the frame. Put the phone to the side to allow the paint to dry. 2. Print a font you enjoy, or handwrite “waving through a window” onto paper. With that as a reference, create a mirrored image of the phrase to use to trace. 3. With your reversed writing, place your phone case facedown and begin to trace the writing onto the case. After you are finished and happy with your writing, allow it to dry. 4. Once your wording has dried, you may now finish creating your window but drawing in the rest of the crossbeams. You may also emphasis the windows by lining each box with a darker color. 5. Bonus! Find your favorite ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Ben Platt image and print them out. You can choose whatever size appeals to you the most. 6. Cut out your little Ben Platt and place him inside your window. Once you adhere him to the case, and it has completely dried go ahead and finally clip on your new phone case. You are now ready to hit the town and show off your phone to all of your friends!

Share with us your version of your “waving through a window” phone case on our Facebook and Instagram page. We can’t wait to see what you have done.

While some of them feel outdated, unrealistic and culturally insensitive, some Golden Age musicals such as “Oklahoma!” and “West Side Story” are timeless classics that are still performed frequently. Nonetheless, each decade after the Golden Age is distinct in its contributions to the musical theatre art form. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and analyze each of the past six decades on Broadway:

1. The 1960s

https://www.tamswitmark.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/CAB-002A-541x346.jpg While more classical-sounding musicals such as “Camelot” and “110 in the Shade” continued to flourish, budding composers such as Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman and Kander and Ebb were scoring their first hit musicals. Star vehicles such as “Hello, Dolly!,” “Mame” and “Funny Girl” catapulted the careers of then-new stars Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury and Barbara Streisand, respectively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVh9zjf0Tww It was common for musicals such as “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “Cabaret” to mix elements of light comedic opera with jazz/swing to tell their stories. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC4g4wkiN_I Not until the end of the decade did rock musicals such as “Hair” begin to sway the direction of musical theatre toward the dominant styles today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlCilKlqrvI

2. The 1970s

https://cdn.skim.gs/images/rmxxurwap3gygb0kztk1/The%20original%20cast%20of%20The%20Wiz The success of “Hair” led to more rock musicals coming to Broadway, specifically “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “Grease” and “Godspell.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfKDYiF1jTw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39tXfUm80Bc The ‘70s also saw a surge of African-American-themed musicals such as “The Wiz,” “Purlie,” “Timbuktu!” and the black-cast revival of “Hello, Dolly!” Two of the longest-running musicals from the ‘70s were “A Chorus Line” and “Chicago.” While composers such as Sondheim continued to thrive with hit shows, other names such as Stephen Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd Webber began to achieve their earliest successes in New York. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_97F4CnzVBc

3. The 1980s

https://www.door2tour.com/media/28443908/miss-saigon-helicopter-scene.jpg?bgcolor=f7f5f5 The ‘80s were the peak era for the pop-opera genre, which combines elements of opera with traces of mainstream pop music. This genre is best exemplified by musicals such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Misérables” and “Chess.” The latter show produced “One Night in Bangkok,” one of the last show tunes to be a pop radio hit in the United States. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgc_LRjlbTU These shows were innovative for their groundbreaking sets, such as having a helicopter onstage (“Miss Saigon”), a chandelier falling (“Phantom”) and a light-up chessboard platform (“Chess”). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZDcSrODALQ American musicals such as “Nine,” “Drood” and “Into the Woods” had similarly structured musical scores. Aside from “Phantom,” Lloyd Webber’s era of commercial peak in the United States included Broadway transfers of “Cats,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Starlight Express.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZKSVKDvkF0

4. The 1990s

https://media.timeout.com/images/100618517/image.jpg While the pop opera genre was still popular thanks to musicals by Frank Wildhorn, such as “Jekyll and Hyde” and “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” Jonathan Larson’s rock musical “Rent” was a turning point in making musical theatre appeal to younger audiences. Like “Falsettos,” “Rent” deals with topics such as homosexuality and HIV/AIDS in contemporary New York City, and Larson’s musical won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQZeH-JTie8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vVnzD0itSE Meanwhile, Disney movies such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” turned into long-running Broadway productions. A new generation of composers introduced Jason Robert Brown and Michael John LaChiusa, whose biggest successes include “Parade” and “The Wild Party,” respectively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBmw2ZY7bDI

5. The 2000s

https://nbclatino.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/intheheightsfeatured.jpg Last decade, there was a plethora of musical adaptations of various films, such as “Hairspray,” “Shrek,” “Legally Blonde,” “The Color Purple” and “Xanadu.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g4ekwTd6Ig While “Wicked” became the decade’s longest-running original musical, more vulgar shows such as “Avenue Q” and “Spring Awakening” received wide acclaim, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEYV5bNMZVo Disney kept producing Broadway adaptations with “The Little Mermaid” and “Mary Poppins.” Furthermore, “In the Heights” brought hip-hop and Latin music to the Great White Way, while more serious musicals such as “Next to Normal” discussed mental illness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvVgm4imyj0

6. The 2010s

https://www.billboard.com/files/stylus/1118039-book-of-mormon-617-409.jpg Lin-Manuel Miranda’s sleeper hit musical “Hamilton” took the world by storm in 2015, using hip-hop and color-blind casting to tell the life story of one of America’s founding fathers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5VqyCQV1Tg Meanwhile, female composers such as Cyndi Lauper, Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori scored success by winning Tony Awards for “Kinky Boots” and “Fun Home,” respectively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFs7UREmXyM Disney’s Broadway adaptations included “Newsies” and “Aladdin,” while more mature shows such as “The Book of Mormon” sold out performances for months back in 2011. Musicals of the 2016–2017 season such as “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” showcased scores influenced by singer-songwriter music as well as EDM and indie rock, respectively.

In fact, some of the best examples of movies with surprise musical numbers have eventually been adapted for the stage, such as “Young Frankenstein,” “The Wedding Singer, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “The Producers.” The following are 15 great musical moments from non-musical movies, in no particular order:

1. ‘My Little Buttercup’ from ‘The Three Amigos’ (1986)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=Zh7eAG2jJkA “The Three Amigos” is about three suddenly out-of-work Hollywood dandies who are hired to help rescue a Mexican village from fearsome bandits, though they think it’s a performance and are unaware the danger is very real. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short star as the titular amigos while at arguably the peaks of their careers. There were actually a few musical numbers in this film, all written by Randy Newman, who makes a voice cameo as the singing bush. However, the audience participation in “My Little Buttercup” makes it our favorite. Bonus Song: ‘Blue Shadows on the Trail' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB89FIStq7Y

2. ‘Love Will Keep Us Together’ from ‘Get Over It’ (2001)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJSQKtx5tVQ One of the many teen comedies of the early ‘00s, “Get Over It” was much quirkier than its contemporaries. The plot, loosely based on “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” concerns Berke Landers, who joins the high school’s musical production of “Midsummer” to get close to his ex. The show the students put on was written by film and Broadway legends Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. In the opening of the film, Berke gets dumped by his girlfriend, Allison, and the movie goes full-on musical. Love it! Bonus Song: ‘Midsummer Night's Dream’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nET7V9DsWgo

3. ‘The Babysitting Blues’ from ‘Adventures in Babysitting’ (1987)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bymE4SuxyR0 Elisabeth Shue starred in this not-quite family-friendly movie. She plays a babysitter who takes a group of suburban kids on a wild trek through downtown Chicago. While being chased by some bad dudes, the bunch winds up onstage with blues legend Albert “Iceman” Collins. And, as Collins states, “Nobody leaves without singing the blues.” The movie also features a very young Anthony Rapp playing a sex-obsessed teen who worms his way into the plot. Bonus Song: ‘Then He Kissed Me’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFrecN_dsPc

4. ‘I Say A Little Prayer’ from ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ (1997)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-J4xYOxJ9w This 1997 romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz has so many songs, it’s shocking it hasn’t been adapted for the stage. The musical highlight, though, has to be when Roberts’ character’s debonair gay best friend pretends to be her boyfriend and gets a little theatrical when asked how they met. Bonus Songs: ‘Wishin’ and Hopin’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c74BSImG4xM ‘I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EA8sWvlBx1U

5. ‘Billy’s Victory Song’ from ‘Billy Madison’ (1995)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=YGeFi3Ap61E “Billy Madison,” about a man-child who must quickly repeat grades 1–12 in order to inherit his father’s Fortune 500 company, launched the movie career of Adam Sandler and gave every middle-school boy countless lines to quote ad nauseum. The movie was written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, the same team behind “The Wedding Singer,” who knew the importance of a good eleven o’clock number, even if you’re not in a musical. Bonus Song: ‘Back to School’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMtkiS1SU_c

6. ‘The Mamushka’ from ‘The Addams Family’ (1991)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCNyHprEZK8&t Another film very close to people’s hearts, “The Addams Family” has a great number with music by Shaiman and lyrics by none other than Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Mind. Blown. The song is sung by Raul Julia (Gomez Addams), who was a Broadway star in his own right and the original Guido in “Nine.” Look for Shaiman himself as the creepy conductor. Bonus Song: ‘Eat Me!’  (technically from Addams Family Values, but whatevs) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7v-LQsQKoY

7. ‘Day-O’ from ‘Beetlejuice’ (1988)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQXVHITd1N4 Even though this musical moment is lip-synced, it’s too much fun and iconic not to be included. Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are newly-deads who try to scare away their home’s new owners and avoid the “ghost with the most” Beetlejuice, played brilliantly by Michael Keaton. There is a Broadway version of “Beetlejuice” in workshop right now, with Alex Timbers directing and Chris Fitzgerald (“Wicked,” “Waitress”), playing the title role. Bonus Song: The intro from the awesome ‘90s animated version of “Beetlejuice” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZIsSQQy96A

8. ‘Cuban Pete’ from ‘The Mask’ (1994)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dyO9SWiY7k Jim Carrey had a very good year in 1994. That year, he starred in “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” “Dumb and Dumber” and “The Mask,” all of which were big box-office hits. In “The Mask,” Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, who finds an enchanted mask that turns him into a cartoon-like superhero. When ambushed by the police, “The Mask” begins a big production number to distract them. Bonus Song: ‘Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You?’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_27x3M410Og

9. ‘Holding Out For a Hero’ from ‘Shrek 2’ (2004)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=puTtnqoqHLQ While the first “Shrek” film became a Broadway musical in 2008, none of the sequels have been adapted, which is probably for the better since musical sequels rarely ever succeed. However, one musical moment stands out in “Shrek 2.” Sung by “Ab Fab” star Jennifer Saunders as the not-so-nice Fairy Godmother, “Holding Out for a Hero” is both hysterical and downright thrilling. Bonus Song: ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXUG9zTpI_w

10. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ from ‘Wayne’s World’ (1992)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thyJOnasHVE Another entry that involves lip-syncing, “Wayne’s World,” starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, is a comedy classic. While joy-riding around town, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” plays, and Wayne and Garth get into it with car-ography and everything. And now, thanks to the film, you cannot hear that song without head-banging during the guitar solo. Bonus Song: ‘Foxy Lady’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue0UpQBmA5s

11. ‘Johnny B. Goode’ from ‘Back to the Future’ (1985)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1i5coU-0_Q This number utilizes a classic element of movie musicals: voice dubbing. Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, travels back in time with the help of Doc Brown and a souped-up DeLorean. Through a whole mess of twists and turns, McFly performs at his parents’ senior prom. However, the voice you hear is not Fox — it’s Mark Campbell, who has done voice-overs for dozens of movies and TV shows.

12. ‘Somebody to Love’  from ‘Ella Enchanted’ (2004)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=1bffIJDTrEM Before her award-winning turn as Fantine in the movie version of “Les Misérables,” Anne Hathaway showed off her singing skills in “Ella Enchanted,” a fairy tale with a twist. Here, Hathaway must sing for a ton of giants and totally rocks “Somebody to Love,” made famous by Queen. Bonus Song: ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2wwmzbxwN4

13. ‘I Put a Spell on You’ from ‘Hocus Pocus’ (1993)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaC-WDrvmUQ The Halloween classic stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy and current Broadway Dolly Bette Midler as the wicked Sanderson Sisters, who are brought back to life in Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night. It was directed by Kenny Ortega, who directed “Newsies” and the “High SChool Musical” trilogy. In this number, the Sanderson Sisters infiltrate a Halloween party and use their hypnotic voices to put a spell on the unsuspecting adults.  It’s only a matter of time before we see a Broadway version of this movie! Bonus Song: ‘Sarah’s Theme’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEYgyWC_BpM

14. ‘Twist and Shout’ from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ (1986)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=tgd46QiHz4I “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” These are the iconic words of Ferris Bueller after his legendary day off. With his best friend and girlfriend in tow, Ferris had an epic adventure throughout Chicago, culminating in a massive lip-sync of “Twist and Shout” on a parade float. It’s nearly impossible not to get into the spirit of living life to the fullest while watching this number! Bonus Song: ‘Danke Schoen’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHCS7uG4lkw

15. ‘Men In Tights’ from ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights’ (1993)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G59JnM4JKNQ Mel Brooks is certainly no stranger to musicals. In fact, almost every movie he’s made has had some kind of big, Broadway-type number. One of our favorites, though, has to be the big title song from “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” A spoof of all the great Robin Hood films, Brooks’ take brings Cary Elwes, Dave Chappelle and Amy Yasbeck into the tale of the hero who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. In this number, the Merry Men take pride in their outfit of choice. Bonus Song: ‘Marian’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yNOXJT5iKQ We could probably make a list of dozens more numbers that have given movie audiences a quick Broadway diversion. Let’s hope the movie musicals are here to stay and more films will at least give us a number or two.

The second episode of the season saw Broadway and television collide when “Hamilton” genius Lin-Manuel Miranda was invited to host. While a host with a career primarily in the musical theatre world is a rarity, “SNL” has tapped into the theatre scene over the years for inspiration. Here are our favorite “SNL” sketches about musical theatre:

1. Crucible Cast Party

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkjjtX83-Cc It’s Miranda and Kate McKinnon together. Is there anything better? This genius sketch sees a group of high school drama kids narrating all the stereotypical moments of a post-production cast party. It’s hilariously accurate, and Miranda is a natural as he adds his trademark raps to the mix.

2. Anne Hathaway’s Les Mis Monologue

Three-time host Anne Hathaway busted out her killer pipes again when she opened the show with a tribute to “Les Misérables,” a movie that would later win her the Oscar. The cast members dream of what they will do with their upcoming day off, and Hathaway finishes the performance with a stunning, Julie Andrews-style high note. Check it out HERE

3. High School Musical 4

(Click to play)
Zac Efron has really embraced his strength as a comedic actor over the past few years, but that route is no surprise after seeing his hilarious “SNL” spoof of his days as Troy Bolton in the hit Disney trilogy “High School Musical.” Efron shines alongside “SNL” legends Andy Samberg, Kristen Wiig, Kenan Thompson and Bobby Moynihan as he gives a speech warning graduates that life is not a musical outside of high school.

4. Save Broadway

https://vimeo.com/40039983 This sketch from Season 34 guest stars Neil Patrick Harris and Taylor Swift and is overflowing with famous SNL cast members, including Jason Sudeikis as a sarcastic and frustrated Phantom. Harris is brilliant in his portrayal of Mark from “Rent,” while the rest of the cast take on characters from some of Broadway’s most famous shows and present their half-baked ideas for how to save the failing theatre scene.

5. A Whole New World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIcHwskTu8k “Girls” actor and “Star Wars” villain Adam Driver displays his musical abilities alongside “SNL” darling Cecily Strong, playing Disney sweethearts Aladdin and Jasmine. The parody of the Disney classic “A Whole New World” shows a more realistic version of the carpet ride, including a bird flying into them and being hit by airplane waste. But, in true musical theatre fashion, the show must go on.

6. Before the Show

https://vimeo.com/213459545 The ladies of SNL hit the nail on the head once again as they satirize an elementary school production of “Legally Blonde.” The backstage conversations are as humorous as the onstage action, with bumbled circular choreography, singing that is too quiet to be heard and a majority-female cast. It’s priceless.

7. High School Theater Show

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPAtpAelwe4 This recurring skit has several different versions featuring other celebrity hosts, including Emma Stone and Reese Witherspoon. It’s hard to say what’s funnier, the student scenes featuring Elizabeth Banks or the comments from the exaserated parents in the audience, played by Thompson and Vanessa Bayer. Parents of theatre kids everywhere will be able to relate to this one.

8. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘My Shot’ Monologue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsupmN90wBk Yes, Miranda’s already on this list, but it would be crazy to ignore his opening monologue, inspired by “Hamilton.” Strolling through the “SNL” studios, he drops truth bombs and even has a clever bit with “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels.

9. ‘50s Romance

https://www.hulu.com/watch/455132 It’s the ladies of “SNL” who once again steal the show, this time in a sketch inspired by “Grease.” Strong’s Angie relives her date with Justin Bieber’s not-so-bright Billy, and the reactions from her friends are sensational. Bieber does little to add to the comedy but does provide a nice vocal run at the end. Any actor can attest to the difficulty of performing in a live show, whether it’s theatre or television. Preparedness for that element can make or break an “SNL” host. Broadway actors face that challenge eight times a week and are the masters of improvisation when things go awry. With that in mind, here’s hoping more Broadway faces will grace the “SNL” stage in upcoming seasons. Andrew Rannells, anyone?

It's no secret that this year has been a pretty great year for Ben Platt, and last night's Tony's were the cherry on top. While most people only previously recognized the 23-year-old from his performance as Benji in the "Pitch Perfect" series, his stunning performance in the new Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Dear Evan Hansen" has proven his acting and singing ability and turned him into quite the household name. In fact, he just won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical!
If you are a Platt fan, you’ve likely listened to “Waving Through a Window” more times than you can count. But, since the internet is a fantastic place just ripe with videos of our favorite stars’ performances, here are 13 videos to watch to further fuel your obsession with this Broadway superstar:

1. Ben Platt and Uzo Aduba Sing ‘A Little Priest’ from ‘Sweeney Todd’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ7yUadOrU8 Okay, so maybe this wasn’t where your mind immediately went when you thought of Platt. But seeing him tackle the role of Mrs. Lovett alongside Uzo Aduba’s Sweeney Todd is one of those things you didn’t know you needed in your life until you had it.

2. Ben Platt — ’Stay With Me’ (Broadway Loves Sam Smith)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYE8L6X_-Ew That riff at the beginning? Sighhhhhh. Our love for Sam Smith is eternal, but for theatre nerds, there’s something just extra swoonworthy with Platt at the mic.

‘3. Crazy Ever After’ Cover by Ben Platt, Henry Platt, Adam Yaron and Elizabeth Gaba

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPQrJwYNrKg The harmonies in this song are such #goals and are too much fun to sing along with.

4. Ben Platt and Laura Dreyfuss Perform ‘Only Us’ from ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ on TODAY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FgEKPxcXEU For all the people shipping Evan and Zoe, you get to watch their love song in all its close-up glory. That eye contact! THAT KISS!

5. ‘Pitch Perfect:’ ‘I've Got The Magic In Me’ (Boys Final)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSsQsFS8Us0 Here’s a little bit of a throwback for you to Platt’s “Pitch Perfect” days. Benji spent most of the movie waving through the window at the Treblemakers, who wouldn’t accept him into their a cappella group. This makes his big reveal all the more amazing once he finally gets his chance to shine!

6. Ben Platt — ‘I Can't Stand Still’ (‘Footloose’)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxVHGzTclxY Watch Platt shred this song to pieces while giving us a glimpse of some classic ‘80s dance moves.

7. Ben Platt Covers "Make It Rain" by Ed Sheeran

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ysTYQvgM_8 In this video, Platt sings along to an Ed Sheeran classic with Adam Yaron on guitar. Where does one have to go to stumble upon performances like this happening in nature? Asking for a friend.

8. Ben Platt — ’Georgia On My Mind’ and Funny Story (Live) @ Le Poisson Rouge

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnldIU_09yE “What does Anna Kendrick smell like?” “Intelligence.” Though this video is a bit on the longer side, treat yourself to some of Platt’s vocal chops and some hilarious behind-the-scenes stories about his life and performances.

9. ‘Donald: The Musical’ (With Tim Minchin, Ben Platt and Abigail Spencer)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZWNHCRCpNM A musical about Donald Trump, Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway and Steve Bannon combined with “Matilda” — sounds crazy, no? But somehow, it’s the best thing ever.

10. Ben Platt and Henry Platt — ‘Make You Feel My Love’ (Bob Dylan)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRVM8UJrhAo Platt takes the stage with his brother, Henry, in this incredible cover that truly shows off the power of musical genes.

11. ‘Who Am I?’ — Ben Platt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtqaMqK9lfk Everyone has to start somewhere, right? Here, Platt performs as Jean Valjean in the Kidz Theater’s 2012 production of “Les Misérables.” His talent is awe-inspiring even in his late teens, but what’s great here is to see how much you can grow as a singer over time. Go Baby Platt!

12. Breaking Down The Riffs With Natalie Weiss — Episode 30: Pitch Perfect

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC9E6ZKRpXc&t=5s We love this one for the shower scene alone, but watching Platt riff his face off to Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious” alongside the amazingly talented Natalie Weiss will be the best 11 minutes and 28 seconds of your life.

13. Dear Evan Hansen: ‘Waving Through a Window’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_CNqKA2t9M Okay, yeah, so this one’s a given. Listen to it as many times as you want — it’s just that good.

As we prepare for the 71st iteration of this beautiful ceremony, it’s only fitting to look back on some of the event’s most magical moments.

Here are five acceptance speeches that left a lasting mark on Tony history:

1. Idina Menzel, 2004

“I’m so proud to be in a musical that celebrates women!” Before her “Frozen” fame, Idina Menzel made a name for herself defying gravity on the Broadway stage. Not only has “Wicked” become one of the most iconic musicals to date, but it shares the story of two strong and empowering leading ladies. Menzel’s acceptance speech at the 2004 Tony Awards is not only joy-filled and emotional, but it commemorates a performance that will definitely remain iconic in theatre history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlOcEcaxtfg

2. Lin-Manuel Miranda, 2008

“Hamilton” was but a glimmer in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s eye when he snagged a Tony Award for “In the Heights.” Still, his musical genius was apparent back in 2008 when he decided to rap his acceptance speech (we’d expect nothing less). Not many people could pull off this unique endeavor, and it’s clear “In the Heights” was just the beginning of Miranda’s musical revolution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYeMCgPT5HQ

3. Billy Porter, 2013

“Kinky Boots” star Billy Porter gave a memorable speech when he took the stage at the 2013 Tony Awards. Not only did he begin with a Shakespeare quote (always a good decision), but he tells the story of discovering the Tony Awards while “washing dishes in the kitchen” to a “Dreamgirls” performance. Porter’s powerful speech reminds us of every actor’s humble beginnings and the magic of musical theatre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axvdCiBTioc

4. Kelli O’Hara, 2015

After six nominations, this Broadway star finally took home a Tony in 2015 for the role of Anna in the revival of “The King and I.” Not only do we love the sincere surprise and happiness O’Hara displays during her win, but not many other acceptance speeches include “shuffling off to Buffalo” during their exit. Well done, Kelli. Well done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MneMh2c-y0M

5. Renée Elise Goldsberry, 2016

WORK! This Schuyler Sister made a powerful statement during her Hamil-WIN last year: “If you know anything about me, I’ve spent the last 10 years of my life — what some would consider the lifeblood of a woman’s career — just trying to have children, and I can testify in front of all of you that the Lord gave me Benjamin and Brielle and then he still gave me this! Thank you!” This rockstar working-momma is truly an inspiration! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYF4IY7JMp4

This 1997 film is the latest movie to get the musical treatment, and it does not disappoint. Whether it’s the adorable and talented Christy Altomare (Anastasia), charming Derek Klena (Dimitri) or the always-astonishing Ramin Karimloo (Gleb), this cast has been featured in a slew of videos lately that have made fans craving more.

Here’s our roundup of 12 incredible performances and interviews that may just hold the key to your heart:

1. Christy Altomare Sings ‘Once Upon a December’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFgbzxJgLl4 It’s always fascinating to see different takes on our favorite songs, and it’s so clear that Altomare has fully committed herself to the role of Anastasia as she yearns for her lost family and life.

2. ‘Anastasia’ Star Christy Altomare Performs 'Journey to the Past'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4htofsf_Bo Watch as Altomare totally nails the musical’s most iconic “I want” song — and feel free to sing along!

3. Christy Altomare and Derek Klena — ‘At The Beginning’ (The Broadway Princess Party)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y86buJDVbk Cartoon Dmitri may have been every six-year-old’s dream man, but real-life Klena certainly fits the bill and lives up to expectations in this swoon-worthy rendition of “At the Beginning” at 54 Below with Altomare.

4. Watch Christy Altomare, Ramin Karimloo and More Perform New Music From ‘Anastasia’ on Broadway

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NrxV3w6AdA In this video, the cast of “Anastasia” performs "In My Dreams," “My Petersburg," "Still" and "We'll Go From There.” This is the first look we’ve gotten at Karimloo as Gleb, and he’s just as awesome as we could have expected from this former Phantom.

5. Anastasia First Look — Derek Klena

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXT8NXvlQxI Here’s the full-length clip of Klena performing “My Petersburg” at the 2017 BroadwayCon. YouTube commenters have been quick to fill in “I grew up in the Roxbury slums” as the song starts in a nod to “Chip on My Shoulder” from “Legally Blonde.”

6. ‘In a Crowd of Thousands,’ ‘Anastasia’ — Christy Altomare and Derek Klena

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75DQsX4aUto This song is a sweet addition to the “Anastasia” songbook, and gives a deeper look into the relationship between Anastasia and Dimitri. Have I been listening to this on repeat for days? You bet. Have I gotten tired of it? Not a chance.

7. First Look: Anastasia on Broadway

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx3Ddcrgldg Watch this video to see a series of show clips that feature some of the stunning scenery and costumes in the show.

8. Never Have I Ever: Derek Klena of ‘Anastasia’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtF-pVg5Ukc Okay, so this isn’t exactly music from the show, but listening to Klena reveal secrets surrounding broken bones, slutty Halloween costumes, cutting his own hair and falling onstage just makes you love him even more.

9. Russian Rhetoric With Derek Klena | TYLER MOUNT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-Eo0mALSSg In this video, YouTube sensation Tyler Mount plays “Russian Rhetoric” with Klena, who makes Mount guess the meaning of Russian phrases — and reveals we still have 13 new songs to look forward to!

10. Hot Sauce Roulette With Christy Altomare | TYLER MOUNT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OxJYIf3BS4 “Oh my god, she will go far, it is my boo, Christy Altomare!” In this video, Mount returns to play “Hot Sauce Roulette” with our favorite star.

11. ‘Anastasia The Musical’ Cast Stopped by to Perform Tony Awards Series! | Billboard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w3Uw9EzvzM In this video, Altomare and Klena perform “Once Upon a December,” “My Petersburg” and “In a Crowd of Thousands.” Yeah, we know these songs appear earlier on in the list, but they have yet to get old. Because this show is pretty new to Broadway, it means we still have plenty of other videos to look forward to as more is released to the public. So use these videos to tide you over before the cast album drops on June 9 — you’re gonna need them!

The internet has become every performer’s stage and the Bermuda Triangle of productivity for the rest of us. Bu since you’re going to take your phone to the bathroom anyway — it’s OK, we all do it — we’ve dug up some Broadway-inspired videos to fill your time and perhaps provide a little inspiration.

Fire up your browser, because here are nine musical theatre tributes to check out on YouTube:

1. Christopher Rice — “Good Morning”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TsE-vHxTtE Following the death of film legend Debbie Reynolds, Broadway actor Christopher Rice tapped his pals, Clay Thomson and Eloise Kropp, to recreate the famous number from “Singin’ in the Rain” as a tribute to the late star. The trio each showcase their triple-threat status, and Kropp is every bit as charming as Reynolds in the role of Kathy Seldon. BONUS: Check out Kropp again below in Cory Lingner’s gorgeous tribute to the musical, “White Christmas.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d_xD3q0yec

2. Peter Hollens and Alex G. — “Disney Medley”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfvehnyCQKU Peter Hollens is a YouTube veteran these days, with videos on his channel dating back to 2011. Hollens loves to cover pop songs, but his channel also features a variety of Broadway medleys. In this mashup of beloved movie musical songs, Hollens joins fellow YouTuber Alex G. for a video that is nothing short of Disney magic.

3. bravofact — “Something’s Coming!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FkcZYdwSlA There’s a smorgasbord of talent in this side-by-side collaboration. Paul Nolan reprises his role as Tony from the Stratford Festival’s production of “West Side Story” to sing the Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim classic. Simultaneously, National Ballet of Canada dancer Guillaume Côté performs Jerome Robbins’ famous choreography. An abandoned building provides the perfect backdrop for this beautiful reminder of why “West Side Story” is one of the greats.

4. Nick Pitera — “One-Man Les Misérables Medley”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9IWAxSpgKA&index=7&list=PLHpmU8efgRa0FmbAeTmwIq0x2pqlZLo9T It’s hard not to be impressed by Nick Pitera. For starters, he has a surprising vocal range, which is how he manages to do a one-man version of the greatest hits from “Les Misérables.” Pitera is a Broadway fan and has covered the songs of several shows, including a “Wicked” medley performed with Hollens.

5. Working With Lemons — “The Schuyler Sisters” and “My Shot and Aaron Burr, Sir”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR5OtoUkVPo The production quality of these videos is noteworthy, especially considering the age of several of the participants. We’re pretty sure the music videos we made with our parents’ camcorders when we were that young looked nothing like these videos. The YouTube channel is operated by a group of family members and friends from Utah who love to make movies. Their “Hamilton” covers are tons of fun, and there’s some blossoming young talent in the group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8ug7TuMW3Q

6. BYU Vocal Point — “Newsies Medley”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVA3iYJ_H5Y The harmonies in this one are spot-on from the very first note. The talented a cappella group collaborated with several of the school’s student performers and crew to create an impressive, Broadway-worthy performance that proves they are more than just your average collegiate a cappella group.

7. Alex Boyé ft. One Voice Children’s Choir — “Let It Go”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAJYk1jOhzk You may have seen Alex Boyé on “America’s Got Talent” in 2015 when he blew the judges away with his performance of Taylor Swift’s mega-hit “Shake It Off.” However, before his television debut, Boyé set the internet on fire with an Africanized tribal cover of the popular Disney song with the talented and adorable One Voice Children’s Choir (also seen on “America’s Got Talent”).

8. Evynne Hollens — “She Used to Be Mine”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fdTJjEyuTE Does that name sound familiar? It should. Unfair as it may be to have that much talent in one family, Evynne Hollens is Peter Hollens’ musically gifted wife who also does Broadway covers. Her hauntingly beautiful tribute to “Waitress” is as impressive vocally as it is in production value, with the video set in a diner after hours.

9. Musicality — “It’s Quiet Uptown”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LrxaZ8Sm7s This high school vocal ensemble from Chicago has covered several of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hits from “Hamilton.” The group is undoubtedly talented, but it’s their cover of “It’s Quiet Uptown” that shows an impressive maturity and emotional depth. BONUS:  James Corden — “Broadway Carpool Karaoke” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YshgmStEZh0 So it’s not really a tribute video, but just in case there’s anyone out there who hasn’t seen this musical theatre-themed segment of James Corden’s popular karaoke bit, we’ve included it for good measure. The hilarious video features Miranda, Audra McDonald, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Jake Krakowski.

As the daughter of a comedian and dancer, it’s no surprise that this writer bears a love for the arts. This show is chock-full of of witty banter and hidden tributes, many of which center around famous thespians, musicals or plays. Whether you loved or hated “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” you can appreciate Stars Hollow’s undying love for theatre. These references are coffee for the soul:

Theatre References in the Revival

Best Theatre-Themed Moments In The Gilmore Girls Years later, it seems as though the residents of Stars Hollow have stayed pop-culture savvy. Throughout the original seasons, Lorelai’s frequent references to famous plays and musicals made her one of the biggest theatre nerds in town. In fact, the revival opens with Rory arriving home looking way too glam to have gone through annoying TSA lines. According to her mother, a more realistic look for someone fresh off a flight would be “singing ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ with a bad haircut.” Lorelai certainly has a few other quips about the Great White Way — she references “Rock of Ages” and admits she’s seen “Kinky Boots” multiple times — but it’s mostly other characters who pay tribute to theatre. Big, bad, bossy Taylor Doose decides a gay pride parade should be the next event on the town’s calendar, and just in time for the anniversary of a Liza Minnelli record. Rory references a character from “Death of a Salesman,” while Logan Huntzberger apparently knows his “Fiddler on the Roof.” Perhaps the most obvious of references comes in the form of the “Stars Hollow Musical,” an outrageous affair commissioned by none other than “Town Meeting” Taylor. Unlike the not-so-memorable Stars Hollow diorama back in Season 5, the musical is written by real-life Broadway composer Jeanine Tesori, who won a Tony Award for her “Fun Home” music last year. Playing the very odd lead roles are Broadway stars Sutton Foster and Christian Borle, who make this ultra-wacky production a treat for those who know them.

Theatre References in the Original Series

Gilmore Girls, Theatre Nerds To dive into the endless world of artistic references in “Gilmore Girls” would be to go full-on Rory Gilmore and write a novel. However, diehard fans can easily pinpoint some of the season’s best homages. Here are some of our favorites:

Season 1, Episode 14

Sookie and Lorelai channel their inner theatre nerds when discussing the baby chick Rory brings home. Like any Tennessee Williams fan, Lorelai names the bird “Stella” after “A Streetcar Named Desire,” while Sookie asks which of the famous actresses who play Blanche acted as a muse for this choice. Sookie asks, “Vivian Leigh or Jessica Tandy?” and Lorelai answers, “Hello! Tandy!”

Season 1, Episode 18

When Rory inherits a trust fund from her rich great-grandmother, Sookie is quick to tell Lorelai, “We can sing the money song from ‘Cabaret!’ You can be Liza, I’ll be Joel.”

Season 2, Episode 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGeHpsFhH10 This tribute had an entire episode named after it! The second season premiere, “Sadie, Sadie!” pays homage to a song from the iconic Barbra Streisand musical “Funny Girl.” After getting engaged to Max Medina, Sookie sings, “Sadie, Sadie, married lady,” and happily proclaims, “STREISAND!”

Season 5, Episode 15

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uhseNPpV-s We’re guessing Kirk was busy during rehearsals of the “Stars Hollow Musical,” as he’s an “accomplished” film and stage performer in the original series. Remember that time he played Tevya in the Stars Hollow Elementary School production of “Fiddler on the Roof?” We can’t forget.

Season 2, Episode 11

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goU8TKht4NA We learn two things about Lorelai Gilmore in this scene. First, she can easily down six cups of coffee (but let’s be real, we already knew that) and second, she and Rory are huge “Rocky Horror Picture Show” fans — so much so that they love dressing up when they go to a viewing. Luke even agrees to play Dr. Frank-N-Furter, but we’re 99 percent sure he didn’t pull through. Yes, yes, we know the witty writing of “Gilmore Girls” offers at least two gazillion more instances theatre nerds can die over.

For years, “Glee” gave musical theatre nerds everywhere their weekly fix of theatrical-style covers of pop songs. But with “Glee” officially in retirement, there has been a void. While I’ve had no shortage of alternative listening material, my copy of the “Hamilton” soundtrack could use a bit of a rest. Enter Postmodern Jukebox, the lovechild of pop music and Broadway.

Here are some reasons why theatre nerds will love Postmodern Jukebox:

1. Unique Broadway-Style Covers of Popular Songs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq4KA0mUnC8 Postmodern Jukebox has done for me what “Glee” used to do. It has taken popular songs I enjoyed and made me love them more — while also taking songs I didn’t care for and making me love them, too. PMJ specializes in reworking popular songs into various classic genres, many of which feel like a throwback to classic Broadway. It has covered everyone from Miley Cyrus to Aerosmith, so there’s no shortage of listening options.

2. Full Band Arrangements

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLnZ1NQm2uk PMJ founder Scott Bradlee plays the piano and acts as the group’s arranger. The rest of the band is made up of a series of rotating musicians. Their talent and Bradlee’s well-layered arrangements make magic.

3. Broadway Guest Vocalists

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMTnqnpJZSg Much like its musicians, PMJ boasts an impressive set of guest vocalists, some with musical theatre roots. Morgan James, who was featured on its recent cover of “Dream On,” has been seen on Broadway in “The Addams Family,” “Godspell” and “Motown: The Musical.” Sara Niemietz, another member of the professional theatre scene in both Chicago and New York, lends her vocals to Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mphD90urEp4 The group’s most famous face may be Shoshana Bean, best known for her run as Elphaba in Broadway’s “Wicked.” She knocks it out of the park with an Amy Winehouse-style cover of Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.”

4. Choreographed Numbers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Ziw_TwXrM It’s hard not to dance when listening to these tracks. PMJ keeps the good times rolling with fun dance numbers, including a Gene Kelly-style dance number with umbrellas and a jazz routine on the counter of an old-school malt shop. It’s as amazing as it sounds.

5. Themed Costumes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fAK0MHs4xE The costumes are the final element that make you feel like as if you’ve dropped into the audience of a musical or that somehow your dream of spontaneous dance numbers happening in real life has finally come true. Just me? PMJ commits to its theme in every way, including costumes. This ensures the music is more than just a fun YouTube video: It’s a transformative experience. Check out the band’s website or YouTube channel, and happy listening!

Ali joined the cast as Christine Daaé on June 13th, becoming the first Asian-American to play this iconic role. As I entered the stage door of the Majestic theater, I couldn't help but feel like giddy and even a little nervous. For many of us, Broadway is a dream that seems far off, and I only recently started working in this fascinating industry. Once inside the Majestic, the Theatre Nerd crew was ushered into Ali's dressing room, which barely fit the three of us. One thing that always surprises me is how small things are in NYC, especially backstage of Broadway theaters (I Digress). We covered a multitude of topics including her childhood, journey to Broadway, getting the role of Christine, and advice for young actors/actresses wanting to pursue a career in theatre. I hope you enjoy my interview with Ali Ewoldt, thanks for watching!

The result is the most amazingly epic session of "Carpool Karaoke" you have ever seen (and heard). The stars got together for the popular segment as the Tony's Awards draw near.
